Please I.D this Mandolin

Hi Guys,

My wifes grandad used to play this Mandolin and we have no idea how old it is or indeed the brand or value. Please could someone take a look at these pics and tell me what they think?

It's a nondescript, inexpensive instrument made somewhere on the Continent, most likely Germany, Romania or Czechoslovakia. Appears to have been stripped and refinished.

What's going on with the back of this instrument? Looks like there are cracks "repaired" with wood putty from here. But it could be discoloration, I suppose...

I agree with Martin, prob German, budget model. Whoops, we have two Martins. I think the wood is either slab cut or else there was some filler added to some cracks or irregularities. This is what is generally called a Portuguese style mandolin.

Looks like is part spalted and part filler.
