There would never be a chip, crack, break, or scratch, anywhere...

I flew with a baggage-checked Martin guitar from Tokyo to Philadelphia (with at least one connection), with the guitar in its stock case completely covered in multi-layers of bubble-wrap, with no problems.

And the bubbles get bigger as you gain altitude.

Cool! Anyone else remember the old BBC series from the 60's, "The Prisoner"?

"The Prisoner" was cool and seemed to be before its time.

And how good would that series have been if Patrick McGoohan and all the other "numbers" had to wear the zorb bouncy ball as part of their uniform?

they did a bouncy-ball for one of those Mars rover landings.

Jimmy Fallon has fooled around with these during some guests' appearances on his show. Not outside, but around the studio, or down the corridor and in and out of the elevators - literally bouncing off the walls. Sure looks like fun. As to instrument cases ... these will never fit in the overhead compartments! :))

Well then, in the ultimate display of space hogging, one could put the instrument inside a deflated case in the overhead, then inflate with a bicycle pump, creating a nice, tight, shock absorbing place. The whole overhead becomes the hard outer shell.

Ta da! :mandosmiley: There ya go! Once again, the brain trust at the Mandolin Café finds the solution to a problem. (Albeit theoretical, both of them ... at the moment ... ;) ) As long as someone doesn't need to get something out of his bag in the compartment during the flight ... which would require deflating and reinflating the bubble ... and of course there's the necessity of checking in the pump, if it doesn't fit into your carry-on ... which would leave less room for your other stuff ... but hey - the instrument would be safe! The rest is just logistics. Again, problems which could be solved by input from the MCBT. This has possibilities ...

Or, "in the unlikely event of cabin de-pressurization, your mandolin bubbles will rapidly inflate. Please ensure your own mandolin is secure before aiding small children traveling with you. The flow of oxygen to your bag may be reduced due to diversion of air to inflate mandolin cases, but we have our standards here on 8-string airlines. Enjoy your flight."
