I just got a gibson A model mandolin. From what I have been able to find out it appears to be a 1950's or early 1960's model. It has the more modern Gibson script
on the peghead. There is no label but there is a stamped number inside that
reads HH 42. Has anyone seen something similar? It must be an A40 model?

Some photos would be immensely helpful. HH-anything does not jibe with FON schemes I'm aware of.

yeah we are going to have to have photos on this puppy. That number don't relate with what Gibson did in the 50's or 60's. Usually the 50's only had a FON stamped inside the lower F hole. The 60's had an orange oval label with serial no. on it and also stamped on the back of the headstock. It could be a prewar A50 with a new postwar neck on it. A40 has no binding on the fingerboard or back. A50 is maple on back and sides in sunburst and A40 is mahagony stained solid walnut color.
