Hi and thanks for your time!

I am trying to ID and date this mandolin. It is a flat back. There is no serial number anywhere that I can find. I can't tell what the animal is in the middle of the label, but it looks like a goat. The bottom of the label says "Trade Mark" and the top says "Made in Germany"..i think.

Any ideas

Thanks for posting this. I have pictures of quite a few examples of these in my files, sometimes referred to as 'pocket' or 'pochette' mandolins and erroneously as 'piccolo' mandolins--which are another thing altogether.

It seems they were popular in Germany, as many of the examples I have seen (and the two that I once owned) were made by the Holdrio-Picolo concern. This example shares the same pick guard shape as yours, but not the headstock profile or tailpiece.

I'm sorry I can't be more help. I've never seen that label before. Hopefully someone will weigh in.

The animal looks like a Stag.

Thanks for responding, would it be safe to say it is 19th century? Also did yours have any serial numbers? I was wondering if not having a serial number would help age it?

I would say prob more like early 20th century or later. I have seen many of these around (see Mick's post above). Nice novelty thing, not much of an instrument.

If they are so common, why can I not find a single one that is identical, or even close? Also why can no one tell who the maker is? If you have seen SO MANY, then you should tell me where you seen all them, so I can get some more info.

If they where so common then someone would know something.

Nice post, pal. I was planning on offering you some additional information, but I just decided not to.

Many of us here spend more than a small amount of our personal time researching for others on this site -- yes, we enjoy the hunt, but also enjoy helping others like yourself. However, if you come off with an attitude like that, there is little reason to do so.
