29th August 2012 at Old Queen’s Head, London N1.

“Green Note Presents”, Promoted by the Green Note Café but not at their normal home www.greennote.co.uk/ (http://www.greennote.co.uk/).

Country: United States. Style: Bluegrass.

Lineup: Peter Rowan (v/g).

Peter Rowan from Boston, MA was one of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys in the 1960s. He then played in various bands such as Earth Opera, Seatrain, Muleskinner and Old and in the Way. In the 1980s he recorded with Flaco Jiménez (I saw them with Tex Logan at the Half Moon in 1983), and in the 1990s with Jerry Douglas (I saw them at the Borderline in 1996). The gig I have the fondest memories about was a Quartet with Tony Rice on (unfortunately my only) visit to Merlefest in 2006. He mostly appears in the UK as a solo artist, though he did bring a band with him to the Green Note in 2010. He mixes Bluegrass (including his co-write with Bill Monroe) with forays into other styles such as his hippie “Tex-Mex” favourites.
