GIBSON F4 LLOYD LOAR ERA MANDOLIN LATE 1921 SERIAL #68472. EX. CONDITION.
This is a real gem. In late 1921, at the direction of Lloyd Loar, pursuant to his newly designed specifications, Gibson put a truss rod in the F4 and made some other modifications in the thickness of the top. Lloyd Loar was with Gibson from 1919-1924 and is responsible for redesigning the F4 among other well-known innovations. The tone of this Mandolin is exceptional. Every note rings. There are no dead spots and the dynamic range is extraordinary. This particular example is the loudest F4 I have ever heard. It can easily be played in a bluegrass band and has been many times. It has a chop like no other F4 I've heard. My jamming buddies in the Bay Area concur and believe me they know, as two of them own 'Loar signed' F5's. The neck is dead straight and there is no body sinkage. It was fitted with high end modern tuners, and a custom made arm rest, and bridge . The action is perfect. There is an approx. 2" repaired crack which could easily be mistaken for a scratch. It is very minor and was professionally repaired. It is in the upper right bout above the pick guard. The patina on the back is magnificent. The finish is 100% original with no overspray. I've played and heard scores of Loar era F4's and this is as good or better than any of them. It also has a very high end pickup with a mini jack outlet in the strap button. You'd be very hard pressed to find a better one, anywhere, at any price. Now is the time to buy. The market is still depressed, but climbing steadily. Five years ago this mandolin sold for $8,500 and it'll be back there sooner than you might think. Modern Arched F style Hard case.
