I've been watching a lot of Reno Bro's lately and Ronnie interviewed Jesse along with some vintage J&J clips.
Jesse mentioned he got a call to go to California to play on The Doors "Soft Parade" album. I played it on Spotify today and for the most part it's a near unlistenable album (opinion) and the cut Jesse is on is one of the worst but there he was. You can barely hear him through the horns and electric guitar but it's pretty amazing that they flew him to California for a tiny spot on the record.
Reno's on RFD is a treasure of mandolin and bluegrass. I'm not sure if there are 2 Loars on over the years but there's one with a pickguard and one without. Who knows that story? They also show clips from the Reno-Smiley regional show from the early 60's where Ronnie is playing the Loar in the background and looking like he'd rather be doing anything else. Dale's Tucker is clearly a great sounding mandolin and can he ever play!
