Oval holes just are looking better and better to me -- beautiful instruments both

John, those are awesome! What is the veneer on the back of the peghead on the oval hole?

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Headstocks don't get much better looking than that. Would love to hear them. That script inlay is amazing.

Skip, that's macassar ebony. I liked the way it looked against the mahogany neck, and so did the customer, so I didn't darken it to look more "traditional", though in many ways, that's about the most traditional mandolin I've made in a while.

John: I was wondering when you would build a traditional oval hole. I think, by looking , that it is std Gibson neck join? What kind of bracing is inside?

The neck construction is like the older Gibsons in that there is no elevated extender over the body, but instead the fingerboard is glued to the wood of the top itself. Yep, this one is pretty traditional with the flat 'board, small frets, black top finish, and Gibson-style rosette (from Roger Siminoff). The bracing, however, is an X rather than the more traditional single transverse brace (that I know you to be a fan of).
