My daughter wants to learn the mandolin and I wanted to get back into playing, so I went shopping. I wanted something perhaps a little quieter to play around the house, and nothing too expensive. The Gretsche is all solid mahogany (top, back, and sides) and sounds quite nice. It's not loud and it sounds fairly mellow. But, the tone is good and I think it would make a nice Celtic or old time mandolin. Perhaps not the best for bluegrass jams.

The action, as expected, was high so I lowered the bridge. I think I may get a bone nut for it and perhaps an ebony bridge, to increase the sustain (current bridge is rosewood). But, overall I'm impressed with this mando for under $250. Fit and finish is nice.

So, I am back on MC after a hiatus for a while and hopefully my daughter (8) and I can learn some things.

This must be the same one. Gretsch New Yorker mandolin (http://www.gretschguitars.com/products/index.php?partno=2718030521). BTW Gretsch is spelled without the end "e".

Yep, that's the one! Thanks on the spelling, not sure how I managed that error.
