7th May 2012 at the Scala, London N1.

Country: United States. Style: Progressive Bluegrass.

Lineup: Chris Thile (v/mandolin), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Gabe Witcher (fiddle/v), Chris Eldridge (g/v), Paul Kowert (b).

Chris Thile formed the Punch Brothers in 2006 after the demise of Nickel Creek. Two of the band come from California (Thile and Witcher), two from the Mid West (Pikelny from Chicago, IL and Kowart ifrom Madison, WI), and only Eldridge from the South (Virginia). I have labelled them “Progressive Bluegrass” above, but really their music is unclassifiable. There was very little classic style Bluegrass until they approached end of their performance. The Classical Music influence was not as strong as when I saw them in 2008 (with much of the performance given over to a four movement suite), but is still there. However, for much of the evening they sounded to me like a Rock group performing with Bluegrass instruments. Most of these photos were taken during the two encores when the band moved away from the microphones to the front of the stage.
