Hi folks -- just finished up some minor-ish repair to get an old Weymann up and running for a customer and thought you might enjoy the pics. This one's a bit worn around the edges but it sure is loud and sweet.

As usual, click here to check out the full blog post! (http://antebelluminstruments.blogspot.com/2012/03/c1923-weymann-style-30-mandolute.html)

Looks good Jake. I used to have one of those and it and almost every other I have seen, have a crack extending from the side of the neck block to the sound hole rosette. I was wondering if you have noticed the same to be true on others you may have worked on in addition to this one. Also on the one I had, the inside appeared to be sealed with schellac, is this true on yours? I think it is a cool design and its nice to see one up and running.

Affirmative, affirmative.

It's typical for the neck to "fold" into the body on Weymanns (and for that matter, on most Chicago flatbacks as well). This is mostly due to heavier strings being used over time and the neck block area suffering for it. If you can find one that hasn't been played since the 20s or 30s it's likelier to be in much better shape since it didn't get the 40-11 strings that seem to always get popped on these!!

Also, yep, all of the mando-family instruments I've seen have been stained inside. People are always trying to tell me in emails that they have some "odd, flamed mahogany" Weymann because they see red inside.
