View Full Version : How to post an image in your post

Click on Add Reply at top of page, next to New Topic. When that page opens, type in your post message and at the bottom of the page there is an option to attach a file. Click on browse and locate your jpeg image on your hard drive, highlight it and click on Open. Thats it.

Remember, images do not show up in Preview Mode.

How do I get my photo (head) on the mandolin player?

Do I upload just my head or the entire photo?

Thanks!

Bill Snyder
Feb-06-2006, 11:13pm
You have to copy the photo (the mandolin player) onto your computer. If it is a windows based machine you can right click your mouse on the photo and choose "Save Picture As" and save the photo. Then open the photo(s) that you want to use in some photo editing software (Photoshop is common) and do your manipulations and save the photo to your computer and then follow the directions on posting the photo on the Cafe.

Actually, it does work. What Scott doesn't mention is that you cannot preview a post with an image in it. If you try to preview it, it doesn't show the image and erases the information about where the image should come from, so when you post it, poof, no image.

If you go without a safety net and just hit "quick post", it works fine.

If you have a Mac running OSX, I've just written an Applescript application to resize pictures easily to post on the Cafe. The app can be found at my public file website. (http://homepage.mac.com/braccio/mandolin)

To run the app, just drop as many files as you want to resize on it. It will ask you for a dimension (in pixels). This is the dimension for the largest side of the image. The script will then create a folder on your Desktop called Cafe-TEMP and will copy the images there, resize them, and rename them Cafe1.xxx, Cafe2.xxx, etc.

Some numbers to keep in mind:

Classified images have these maximum numbers: height - 460 pixels, width - 410 pixels, maxsize - 120 kb.

Message board - maxsize - 153.6 kb

As long as you choose you longest size to match those for the classified numbers, you should have no problem. Then again, I didn't test this with every file type, so your milage may vary.

Hi Greg. Did you follow these instructions:

Click on Add Reply at top of page, next to New Topic. When that page opens, type in your post message and at the bottom of the page there is an option to attach a file. Click on browse and locate your jpeg image on your hard drive, highlight it and click on Open.

Greg Stec

Yep, I did all that. Four times. I even logged out and logged back in to reset myself, then tried again. No go.
The BROWSE function does show the correct location of the pic when I return from the picture search.
Either MY software is not passing the location to your software, or YOUR software is not picking it up.
BTW, I'm using Vista, if that matters.

I've found when using Flikr or snapfish the image links won't work here. #Usually because they have some extra information in the address specific for the host.

For example
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2462325226_bf19bd00dc.jpg?v=0 is the path to a photo on Flickr that won't drop in the image with the image button. #If I drop the characters after the .jpg (which I believe tell Flickr what size image to show) the image will work

If I past this http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2462325226_bf19bd00dc.jpg into the image button my picture shows up

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3023/2462325226_bf19bd00dc.jpg

However, this can make for large photos being pasted into threads and about kill the thread for dial up users.

Let's have a lesson in deleting a post. Any message that you post you can delete. You can also edit any message that you post. If you post a test picture then by all means feel free to delete your test picture as well. Take a look at the image below. You'll notice the Delete and the Edit buttons circled in red. Is it safe to assume this is no longer an option? Because I don't see that. Edit, yes; delete, no. Lord knows many times I wish I had - if you know what I mean!

I also have not yet figured out how to include an image in the body of a post. Nothing big, just smilies that the Café doesn't offer.I've tried a few times to no avail. I'm sure it's something simple, I just haven't tumbled onto it yet. Any help there would be much appreciated.

Hey JB,

If the picture resides on your PC, then you use the "Manage Attachments" button below where you write the text of your post. A file browse window will pop up, and you put the location of your photo on there and upload it.

If you want to post an image that is on the web, you can do it this way: go to the website where the desired image is. Right click on it and select "properties", and you will see the actual web address of the image. Copy that address, and hit the "Insert Image" button (looks like a little post card) above the text field.

Hope that helps,

Lee

Hi Lee

Thanks, but ... what I'm trying to do is include an image right in with the text of a message, rather than in the separate area for images. I've seen people do this but I haven't figured out how yet. This is a really small potatoes issue - basically, I just want to use smilies that aren't in our software, and it's self-defeating for them not to appear where I want them, mixed in with the text.

Pretty noodly, eh? I admit it. :whistling:

JB,

If you use the "Insert Image" option, the image will be in your text, like this:

http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:EyZLLlZW92_4MM:http://www.cmt.com/shared/media/images/amg_covers/200/drd500/d555/d55536c7rkb.jpg

Then you can put more text after the image. If the image you want to use isn't on the web, I think it's pretty easy to get a free PhotoBucket (or similar) account. Sometimes I just post pix to my blog to do that.

Whee! Fun! Thanks!!! http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/ernaehrung/food-smiley-004.gif

Just sharing the wealth ... of knowledge, that is. It's free, so I can afford it ... ;) ... :whistling:

1) You can't. You could ask a moderator for a section to do it via PM.
2) From the web there isn't a limit b/c it doesn't actually use server space here. For attached from your PC files the limit is 390KB.

Hi Rick,

Is your photo named DSC000562.jpg already accessible via the internet? (e.g., in a gallery at Flickr.com)

The "insert image" code is looking for the URL, so the photo must be accessible via the internet. For example, if you use this URL for someone else's DSC000562.jpg, http://www.hkdelight.com/antiques/dsc000562.jpg, you would see the following photo imbedded in your post:

Okay - just some observations and confusion here.

Several years back, the first few postings on this thread (and per the title of the thread) on how to attach an image were accurate.

The previous method (as described at that time) for attaching an image involved clicking the attach icon, browsing to a location on your PC and uploading said image. Now - though hovering over the icon spawns a balloon which says 'Insert Image - by default it now brings up a dialogue box which says, 'Please enter the URL of your image.' URL's are defined as web addresses, and this does not accurately reflect a local PC and file location; many people have images on their local hard drive and not at an external website like Photobucket or a Kodak gallery or something.

I tried to 'path' the image in that dialogue box (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Pictures\My New One\FinishedBack.jpg) and all I see is the path - and the location of my image is not a true URL.

However, it does appear the 'Manage Attachments' option toward the bottom under 'Additional Options' will allow you to browse to a local folder/location where your images reside, and attach them similar to what this original thread described.

Regarding editing and deleting posts, I've discovered that after a few hours, you can no longer edit or delete a post. This is commented on within this thread, but I didn't notice any 'official' announcement or change to that feature - not a big deal. As one Moderator did indicate, you can request a moderator to remove a post via a Private Message - and maybe they'll edit it for you too. (Though I could see where that could be tedious and time-consuming for them; they're busy enough doing the great job they do of moderating!)

Not trying to be contentious or anything here; just relating some observations after I had trouble uploading an image to a P.M. recipient. (It had been a long while since I uploaded an image, and things have
changed!)

Thanks for letting me comment! :)

Actually none of this is true. There is no such button. I've been attempting to find a 📎 button, the button you are talking about, and they simply are not there. I've tried over and over again. There isn't even an option to attach a file through the "advanced options"...why is it so complicated for something that should be so simple!?

Bill McCall
Jan-16-2022, 8:46pm
Actually there is, third button from the right side of the top of the 'quick reply' bar.

You might note that this thread is 11+ years old and there are several more recent threads about this, but the instructions are current. You can look at any number of threads with pictures, videos and links added by a wide variety of users, so perhaps its not the system.

btw, a simple ask will typically yield better results for you than a bit of a rant.
