Dobe

I just scored an old Cyclops & have a few questions. It's black & I'm wondering if it was re-colored/ and or if I should consider some sort of re-finish. Did they make any all black ? Pretty sure it's the real deal, has 4- holes in the peak of the cone. Surprisingly heavy as well. I've played a few 30's - 40's Dobros that were considerably lighter. The bigger question would be: there are also 7 divots on either side of the top; something decorative mounted there ? and 4 divots in a diamond pattern with 1 larger divot in the middle of the headstock, and along the tuner posts, which I imagine was for some sort of logo mounting ?
Thanks in advance , here's a vid:

Oh yeah, came from an antique store CL posting simply entitled " Unique Instruments" :

They did have a pretty nice old Kay mando but wanted too much for the work it needed.
Just goes to show you gotta check out the oddball listings ! Won't even say what I stole it for, but the new strings their guitar guy installed were running OVER the coverplate. Stick shoved in where the nut used to be. They told me it was 'home made'.
I also had to gingerly pull 1 small nail out of the edge of the cone to remove it. There were 2 other nails under it, still in the edge. Cones in pretty good shape, a little chewed up were some other Bozo worked around a nail. Seems saveable for sure :
Almost a hint of a 0 and either an 8 or a 3 on top of the headstock but no other numbers I could find anywhere. Thinking maybe they were sanded out during a strip & spray paint job ? (Nooooo ! say it isn't so :) :mandosmiley:
