A great Rivercity Bluegrass Festival this past weekend with a back-to-back mandolin workshops - first Adam Steffey then Sierra Hull - and they did a nice tune together in between workshops. Simply wonderful stuff - and a terrific festival.

Cool stuff. Love Adam's crosspicking bit around 0:20! Anyone know the name of the tune?

Cheers

That's pickin' and grinnin'.

Can't help but believe they are both learning from each other.

Thank's for posting.

Cool video, thanks for sharing. The tune is "Chinquapin Hunting". I know I'm picking nits here, Mark, but Adam's using alternate picking across strings, not crosspicking (http://www.johnmcgann.com/crosspicking.html).:) Either way, sounds fantastic.

Thanks for the tune info, Jordan. I know the other Chinqupin Hunting, crooked 3-part old-time tune in A. Do you know where this one's from? And yes, saying crosspicking was sloppy on my part!

Hey Mark, I haven't had my coffee yet, sorry to (cross) pick on you:) I don't know the old-time version (learned this one from bluegrass players), and am unsure if it's the same tune. Off to youtube to investigate.

Sorry to hijack the thread a bit, but I found an interesting path to this tune. Looks like it's an old appalachian tune. Check this out, Hiram Stamper playing the tune at age 93!
http://www.aca-dla.org/cgi-bin/showfile.exe?CISOROOT=/Berea43&CISOPTR=8&filename=9.mp3
Then, his son Art plays it:
http://www.aca-dla.org/cgi-bin/showfile.exe?CISOROOT=/Berea43&CISOPTR=1032&filename=1033.mp3
Then a version from Art's CD with chords that is fairly old-timey, especially how it deals with the B part:
http://www.artstamper.com/music/samples/chiquipinhunting.mp3

Looks like after that someone jazzed it up with the Gmaj7 on the start of the B part, but I don't know who. Interesting to listen to the first link and then go right to the OPs video of Adam and Sierra and see how the tune has morphed!

I wonder if the other chinquapin hunting in A is also derived from the same appalachian tune. Hard to hear it, but then again, it would be hard to say that Adam and Sierra are playing the same tune that Hiram is playing without hearing the path through Art Stamper! Then again, the third part of the version in A has a IV to V chord progression, which is pretty much the B part of the other one.

Mighty fine; can't wait to see Sierra here at Midwinter next month. From this video I'd put Adam in the finger planting camp (during solo's) and Sierra as more of an edge of the palm on the bridge gal. Both styles seem to work pretty well.
Nice vid MRT, is Joe playing a Gil there ?

Dobe, Yeah Joe is playing a Gil. He sure pulls such a spectacular tone. Thanks for the great Steffey/Hull video MarkD!

Looking at the original video, I can't figure out what's going on when Adam hits the B part first time through. At 21 seconds, it sounds like he plays a line going up to the high D (10th fret on E string). But after watching the video many times, it's clear he's still in first position. There's no pinky stretch up to the 10th fret. The video and audio are definitely aligned. Sierra's not hitting that note in the chords. Only thing I can think of is that he hits the harmonic on the D string 5th fret in the middle of that line?!! I love the sound of it. Or maybe it's a sound artifact?
