Nice!!
How did you do the black color?

Keith: is this a hybrid oval? What kind of bracing does it have?

BradKlein
Jan-06-2012, 8:27am
Lovely!

I am also wondering about the challenges in having an round-hole top with the long neck of an ff hole mandolin. That moves the bridge up toward the neck block, and I assume that is the logic of making the hole oval instead of circular - keeps more spruce between the bridge and the sound hole. Do makers brace differently than they would with a Gibson style A-model neck, which is three frets shorter?

Very well executed. I would like to see a photo of the top out in the sun to see if the black is opaque or if the wood grain shines through. I'm sure the new owner will be happy!

Yes the top is opaque. It's X bracing, plate thickness, body shape etc. are my take on the oval hole, it's mandolin not gibson :)
Thanks all,
Keith

To answer a private messege I make and design all my tailpieces. They are from 304 stainless steel and are about 4 times thicker than the stamped normal mando tailpieces you get when you buy a $300 to $3800 (or more) mandolin.

Lets call it good ol USA practices. Give the consumer much more than they thought they wanted but now know that this is what they really wanted.

I'm dying to know who got this lovely mandolin. I'm so incredibly happy with my carved-top oval from Keith. Congratulations, it's sure to sound as nice as it looks.

That is a really cool looking piece Keith. Has a bit of a Stephen Owsley Smith look to it.

Wow! Someone got an amazing deal (http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180967308696) on this mandolin. Anyone here win it?

Glad you bumped this thread Jim. I hadn't seen the sound clip above. Asthetically stunning, and fantastic tone. The E-Bsy auction winner is probably as shocked as we are. Gone for a song!

I bid on it, initially because I was unwilling to see it sold for cheap. As late as last night bids were still under $400. I placed a bid late in the auction, and won!, for much less than my max bid. I don't know how it came to this, but the instrument will always be owned by a player who values it, if I have anything to say about it.

Wow, I wonder why Mark let it go so soon and for so little?

Doghearty, congrats on a beautiful mandolin! I hope we get to hear the rest of the story.

I was watching it last week but forgot to check in today before the end. It went for less than I had expected - congrats to doghearty for winning such a fantastic instrument.

Apparently, the person who put it on Ebay was not Mark. Mark messaged me privately and said (essentially) that he has gone on to other instruments. A serious case of MAS, I think.

Hi there, and congratulations on such a deal! I would certainly have it back at that price. No MAS here...I have at present only one mando (a gorgeous Kimble, #22http://www.mandomusic.com/kimbleinstruments/kimble1to50.html f-hole), with a couple of octaves/citterns and a couple of guitars. That's a VERY nice Newell mando, and congrats again.
