Just heard about an upcoming duo show in Hudson, NY - at what looks like a nice club there. I bought tickets for my godson who is in college nearby!

Wednesday January 11; 8pm
Chris Thile & Michael Daves
Helsinki Hudson; 405 Columbia St. Hudson, NY
tickets $18 in advance, $22 at the door

I think this'll be a chance for the boys to rehearse for their big Lincoln Center show the next day in NYC. That is a pricey ticket, but the room is absolutely superb (Allen Room in Frederick P. Rose Hall) so unless you can get them to play a house concert in your living room, you can't really do better, soundwise. I'm sorry to miss that one.

Thile - Daves was my favorite live performance of 2011 and I saw very many fine performances of varying styles. To miss a chance would be a huge opportunity cost. Of course, if you dislike bluegrass-like sounds, do not go. I had an 18 year-old with me who grew up in an urban gangland type environment with a different ethnic background. He thought they sounded too "crunchy." Interesting description.

Woah, that's 45 min from where I work in Albany... and I get off at 6. Thanks for the heads up! I think I'll have to give that a listen. I've been wanting to see Thile for a while now. Probably going to see the punch brothers in Burlington next month. Got to meet/jam with Daves after Noam's solo show in NYC last month... cool stuff. Anyone else going to this?

Anyone make it to the Helsinki show in Hudson, NY last night?

Noam Pikelny sat in at Michael's weekly (normally solo) show at the great Rockwood Music Hall (NYC) on Tuesday. That was a fun show, and a contrast to the duo shows with Thile. No harmony singing. My favorites were some swing tunes where Noam's unique improv, and smooth banjo tone really shined.

I made it to the Hudson, NY show. Never saw Thile before, but I did meet/jam with Michael Dave a little after Noam's solo show at Rockwood last month. Said hi after the show last night, and got Chris to sign my mando case so now it's magical! :p The show was a lot of fun, for just two guys they sure to put out a lot of energy/sound. Definitely have some new licks working out in my head now... I especially liked their "fiddle tune request" segment of the show. Should have shouted Chinquapin Hunting louder, Michael Daves said after he knows it and I wanted to hear it...

'Twas indeed a smokin' show.

The NYC show from Thursday received a fine review this weekend in the NY Times by Jon Pareles (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/14/arts/music/chris-thile-michael-daves-at-the-allen-room-review.html). That's what you get for playing for the uptown swells!

"The duo... treats old songs not as quaint hand-me-downs, but as heartfelt stories and enigmas still to be pondered." A nicely turned phrase and true to boot.

And I'm proud to have the Mandolin Cafe profile of the boys linked in the online version of the Times story! So those intrigued enough to click on the words, "cheaper plywood guitar" will get to the Cafe, and those are the best folks, IMHO!

The website says there are no tour dates at the moment. Clearly, that's not right. How do you find out where they're playing? Do you have to follow them on twitter?

They may not have any tour dates scheduled since Thile is gearing up for the new Punch Bros release. Both Michael Daves (http://michaeldaves.com/) and the P-Bros (http://www.punchbrothers.com/) have mailing lists via their web sites where you can sign up.

Thile is over in Europe. I'm going to see the Punch Brothers tomorrow night in London.
So it could just be that they fall off the US radar if they go to the other side of the pond.
