I love this banjolin but find it impossible to string in the normal way. From the picture you will see what I have been doing but it is a pain trying to remember which way to turn which tuner. Is there a better way?

You have it strung upside down. The lower 2 tuners on each side are for the outside strings (G and E). The upper 2 tuners on each side are for the middle pairs of strings (D and A).

Yes Mike, But if you do it that way the strings are winding their way over the other pegs and reach the nut at an impossible angle and the strings will not adjust smoothly.

Have you thought about adding a pair of String Tree Retainer Guides? Like these: http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_parts/Electric_guitar:_String_trees_retainers.html

I find it rather ironic that the manufacturer named it "The Ideal" when the arrangement is clearly not. One of my previous employers owned an old extrusion machine which was proudly and conspicuously labeled "Perfected #2".

Thanks Mike, I was unaware of the existence of these guides, looks promising I will have a think about them. Allan

80450 If the tuners are individual, you can move the upper left 2 tuners to the upper right, and upper right 2tuners to the upper left. That would allow you to string as you have, but all tuners would turn in the same direction. If they are in groups of 4, you would have to replace with individual right and left tuners and install as described above. I hope this helps.
