I put some cash down on a sweet looking A9 at Guitar Center here in Raleigh just a few minutes ago. #I got a VERY good deal I think, and couldn't be happier. #They didn't have a case to sell me or include for whatever reason, but I still got a good deal. #It's lighter colored than some of the ones I've seen, and the sound and playability are amazing, even to a newbie that can go through his whole repertoire in 10 minutes http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I've visited half a dozen local shops to play whatever I could get my hands on, visited Gibson in Nashville, and spent countless hours reading through the Mandolin Cafe archives. #When I first started searching I thought I could be happy with one of the higher end imports, but after playing an F9, I knew that I couldn't be happy with anything less. #It took a little while for my case of scroll envy to die down, and now I know I'll be absolutely thrilled with this A9. #I took some pics while I was at the shop, here's a link-

BTW, I'm not knocking anybody that plays an import- I know there are some fine Eastmans, MKs and such out there.

Looks great. Where is the guitar center located? I will be on NC State campus on Saturday. Is it on Glenwood? Where abouts? Directions from Hillsborough/state campus or the beltline.

Thanks hydrilla!

Congrats! Great looking A9! Same color as the F9 I picked up! The A9 I have is very dark, but that light brown really stands out. Have fun........... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

As far as I know, the only one I know of is on Capital Blvd. If you get off 440 heading north on Capital, it's less than a mile up on the right.

Thanks for the congrats y'all http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Way to go! I'm still lovin' mine. I pick up the case that they had to special order in a few days, (why do they 'back out' the case price and sell the cases seperately?) I had to go back and haggle for the case (I threatened to use their 30 day return policy) since I knew that others got good deals with cases!

GEFool, what can I expect to pay for a case? I knew I couldn't get them to include it in the deal, they weren't willing to come off their normal price until I brought in a printout of the infamous Guitar Center F9 post. I'm very happy to get the deal that I did. They didn't have a case in stock but I'll get them to search the other stores and find one for me, assuming they sell it cheaper than anyone else.

I thought the A9 was supposed to come with a case. I know mine did.

GC has a sku for both with the case and without. Big Joe says they were all supposed to come with a case, but for the price I'm paying, I don't mind having to buy one.

Awesome...but what is the NEXT axe? Tee Hee....I've played a few A9's and they sound pretty good to me, it's just that whole no money, no job thing keeping it from my hands :-)

Since you're looking for a case I'd suggest looking at Elderly Instruments (http://www.elderly.com) or Greg Boyd (http://www.gregboyd.com). I know you can get a decent hardshell case for an A model mandolin for $65.00 from Elderly and Greg Boyd is probably in the same range. GC will probably have to order one and then mark it up further, and you won't come out any better. It will also probably take longer for them to order it for you and get it, contact you etc. while if you order it from a good place (that has mando cases in stock!) you get it delivered to your door.

Feels like you're wearing underware, doesn't it?

That #2 mandolin picture looks like a totally different color. Must be the lighting. I know the lighting wasn't a factor in the color change on the Vulcan. Did you have it painted?

You might want to check out the classifieds. Someone just listed A-style cases.:O

Yeah, it was the lighting in the 2nd pic.

Regarding the bike, I cut the stock gas cap assembly out and (well, with a buddy's help) welded in a flush mounted pop-up cap assembly, replaced the fenders with ones I liked better and fitted them, etc. and then had a good friend paint it for me. #It's a fun bike to work on and ride #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Thanks for the tip about the cases, I'll go look now.

I see you decided against a Howard Morris ... I too will have an a-9 .... bought it with new warranty card from a fellow that got it in a silent auction for a scholarship benefit .... it was donated by Gibson ... surely they sent out a decent one ... this one is unplayed and looks alot like yours .... got a great deal and the warranty for well under a thousand .... should be here any day ..... good luck with yours

Yes I did decide against Howard Morris, but I tell you what- I talked to half a dozen of his customers, and talked to him several times via e-mail. Howard is a class act and anyone in the market for a new mandolin should talk to him. He took the time to answer whatever questions I had, and gave me the confidence that he made good instruments. The bottom line for me was that the Gibson was here locally and I was able to play it, and knew without a doubt that it was what I was looking for, and at a price I just couldn't pass up.

Congrats on your A9 magnumgray http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif
