Binding masking

I'm about to start finishing the the first F I've done in a couple of years and I'm thinking about the problems involved with masking the scroll binding. I generally tape the easy parts and scrape the rest. I tried art store masque which is a latex type stuff that's more of a mess than it's worth. I'm wondering if painting it with shellac would make the scraping any easier.
What's everyone elses experience?

Give it a try, it's surely no harder, but my experience is; nothing makes it enough easier to be worth the extra time and work. YMMV
