I have a questions about use the EQ

how do you use it for octave mandolin or cittern ?

For guitar the most common using is :

Low +4 -> 6 dB at 160 Hz
Low médium - 4 dB at 500 Hz
Médium -2 dB at 1,6 kHz
High + 2 -> 4 dB at 6/8 kHz

What do you use ? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I think it should vary with the electronics you are using, the instrument, the player, the venue and the sound you want. I start with the EQ flat (at zero). Then I start at one end of the EQ and adjust that band until it sounds better than flat if possible. If not, I leave it flat. Then I go through each band and do the same. I try to not go any farther from flat than I can help it on any band. "Better" is purely subjective based on my choice of how I want to sound. A lot of people say, "Well, I want it to sound "natural' or 'acoustic.'" To me, that generally means a good microphone, properly positioned, with the EQ flat.

Excellent reply Johnny! #I like to first listen to it flat and then tweak it before i dump it to the final product, in my case a cassete or CD for friends, car, etc. #It, as with so much in music, is purely a choice made by you to please your senses and hopefully others will like it too. #I've worked construction most of my life and my high freq hearings is bad so i used to tend to tweak up the highs to the point people who can hear well cringed but I've realized my deficency is mostly just me so I usually make me a "special copy" w/ the enhanced highs for my enjoyment. #Experimenting is a lot of fun and a great chance to learn what to and not to do too. #Have fun with it, go overboard and see what kinda sound ya can get your mando/band to make. #Messin around with it has the potential to "find" the "sweetspot" in a different way!
