I like to get ideas from jazz horn solos and play them in mandolin friendly keys. Any recommendations for software that will CHANGE KEYS without slowing the recording ? I have Mac computers.
Thanks

I use Best Practice on a Windows machine - dunno if it's available for Mac. I love it on the PC.

You can also use Audacity which I know is avail for Mac. But it's less flexible + a couple more clicks than Best Practice

I use Amazing Slow Downer. You can also change the key and (or) the tempo. They also have program for videos
and you can download a demo before buying. Here is the link : http://www.ronimusic.com/

Claude, Do you use Macs ?...Are you satisfied with the program?...Thanks, Rod

Also, Remember. I want the software to CHANGE THE KEY and not the speed. If it has the capability to slow down that's a bonus, but not the main objective. Thanks, Rod

+1 for ASD. Change pitch by half steps as well as by cents. (Plus, yeah, change the speed, too.)

Totally worth the $49 or whatever... I use it daily. (on my Mac)

A free program is karafun. it's a karaoke player. load any mp3 in. I use it for learning different songs we transpose. tempo and key changes work. and it's free.

Transcribe! (http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/overview.html) will change pitch and tempo independently. Versions available for Mac OS, Linux and Windows. Cost is $39. Yes you can find other programs for free. But Transcribe's learning curve and capabilities are worth the cost. (No Financial Interest).

Thanks , So would you say transcribe is fairly easy to learn ?

Not trying to push ASD (no financial interest!), but here's a screenshot... it's super easy to use. Independent sliders for speed, pitch and balance. Pitch can be changed by semitones or cents. An EQ if you need it. Plus you can pinpoint specific parts of the song and set them as presets so you can loop through a solo or difficult passage or whatever. Grab any music files from your library (works with mp3, Apple's AAC, WAV files, you name it).

I find Transcribe easy to learn and use and I'm not particularly geeky with respect to learning new applications. You can try it out free for 30 days, after that you have to buy a license to keep using it. What I really like about transcribe interface (screenshot here (http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/screenshots.html))is the piano keyboard layout, the waveform display and the filters. Often it's hard to hear or identify a note and these tools really help.
I've been using it for about 4 years and can tell you that it's well supported with updates at no additional cost.

Cool! I'll have to try QT.

Just an FYI... that's Quicktime Pro ($29) vs. the free Quicktime Player.

+2 for ASD. I use it for both slowing down and pitch change (without tempo change). I find the latter works great for singing.

My Quicktime is the free v. 7.7

sorry Jean! I should have done some digging before misrepresenting! :)

I have the QT Player 10, which is built into Mac OSX, and I don't have the "A/V Controls" in any menu.

I can't find a free QT7 anywhere... I only see QT7 Pro. Is it Mac or Windows?

I use Best Practice too but there is a lot of distortion when you slow it way down best program I have ever used was SlowBlast I bought at Guitar Center cheap and it was well worth it no distortion but when I switched to Vista it wouldn't work in that OS

I'm not really computer literate .

Hi rgp. I use it on iMac with snow Leopard. As the program is able to adapt both speed and key, I can do many things with it.
Another nice trick is to isolate a fragment, to play it as a loop, until you can play the passage up to speed.
You have also the "brother" with videos, but it works only with CD's and DVD's. In each case, you can download the demo and judge by yourself ....

Another note .... Any thing I open with QT can be controlled, Video and FLV files included, so I can download a you tube convert it to FLV and then manipulate it in QT
I don't know that I could explain how to do it all bet I learned it via google and trial and error so I'm sure most anyone can ......

I posted this some time back but here's the info again: a nice free solution for this issue is available via an applescript that will allow you to change the pitch of a tune via Quicktime. It's easy and works very well. Check it out here... (http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=changepitch)

Have fun!

I use an app I downloaded for my iPhone / iPad called Capo. It enables both pitch and speed adjustments, and lets you set A and B points to loop. I use it routinely to pick apart solos. It was $20 - relatively costly for an iOS app - but worth every penny. The publisher (supermegaultragroovy.com) also has a desktop version of Capo that apparently generates tablature quasi-automatically and has support for mandolin tab. I haven't purchased the desktop version of Capo, so I can't advise on how well the auto-tab feature works. But the iPad/iPhone app works great.
