Hello,
New guy on the forum, new to mandolin.

I'm getting my Weymann #15 up & running
and wonder what would strings would you
recommended?
This was my Grandfather's mandolin-
I've had it for years, but I've never strung it up & played.
(I'm a long time ukulele and bass guitar player.)

Bitten by the mandolin bug,
excited to give it a go!

Thanks,
-Matt

Thanks, Ed.

Interesting (& HUGE) forum here,
I guess my question should've been posted in the "equipment"
section... I still have a few small repairs to make on the
Weymann, but can string it up for now (I've got to play this
mandolin), the three remaining strings on the instrument
won't get me there. No music stores nearby, so I'll be ordering on-line.
Hard to wait!
I'll post a query in "equipment".

Cheers,
-Matt

If I am thinking of the right kind of Weymann they won't like very heavy strings so I would go with something like the Martin strings made for the old bent tops and such.

Hello, JGWoods
Thanks for the advice- I posted over on the "equipment" section
about this (I figured that was where I should've posted)-
and other folks also thought light gauge was the way to go.
I just ordered a set of D'Addario J-62s, and anxiously wait
for them to get here- I want to play this mandolin!

Cheers,
-Mattman

Welcome to the forum! Great resource! So if it has no strings then you may need some help setting and positioning the bridge for correct action and intonation. Search the forum, tons of info on it.

Matt,
When I read your posts I think I am reading verse. :)

Thanks, Bill- I'm just full of blather, to be polite.

Mandobart- I'm assuming bridge placement is:
nut to twelfth fret distance = twelfth fret to bridge distance,
then tweak for best intonation?
(I remember that from setting-up banjo ukes.)
Once the strings are on, I'll see how the action sits, and adjust if needed.

I haven't even played my mandolin yet, and I'm having fun.
Can't knock that.

Cheers,
-Matt
