View Full Version : hELP...INTERVENTION...

Feb-18-2004, 5:27pm
My name is db and i'm a closet BRW addict. i would have never thought this and certainly never intended to mention it publicly in a World forum But...i'm at work(?)(not sure this qualifies)and i'm stuck listening to one of our community MP3's over&over&over. The tune is(of all things) Weekend Lover(the shame). Its a great tune w/sweet banjo and outstanding tenor vocals/harmony... but its that dang BRW break thats killing me. Bad man Scotti...bad. i need a community intervention before i get fired! help...must stop....hi boss!

...Hey thanks for the kudoz DB...Im kinda fond of that break also...Im supposed to get some more MP3's of that session soon...Im pretty tickled with the way they turned out too....The band Ive got together now is due to go into the studio March 6th to lay some stuff down....hopefully it turns out as good.....the Weekend Lover break is a fairly simple break...the older I get I get more firmly rooted in the "less is more" theory....I was going for pure tone on that one....and Im thankful that the engineer captured it....thanks again,,,, http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Less is more is good by me. That slight hesitation was nice as well. Hey...March 6th...number 6....BRW...hmm...bound to go well. That mando really does have a nice round tonal quality. Congrats. Hmm...do i still have to put that i Rep for another builder?

I'm "stuck" in another way with BRW #23. I've strung up with Elixer Nanowebs, and I don't really care for what it's done to the instrument's tone. So I've put off recording some sound samples to post. But these strings are probably going to last until Christmas, so now I'm stuck! http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif Anyway, I'll be in some J74's soon and I'll get them done.

..from all the reports Ive read on them new Elixers I would be tempted to cut 'em off and swallow the money lost...get a set of Bush's and be done with it.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Scotti- great break, but it was too short! All I want to hear is mando lately, I gotta get out of that. Seriously, great song, great banjo, and really good voice for bluegrass, was that you?

..Thanks Neal...yea I wish the break was longer...No,,the singing wasnt me...it was Darren McGuire/guitar/lead and tenor....Dewey Smith/bass/lead voice on chorus and the writer of the song and banjo player/baritone singer/Merle Boggs doing all of the singing. I wasnt a part of this band....they hired me to come in and redo all the mando parts after their mando player quit....

..Hey Dennis..just for the heck of it..what did you like about that break so much?...I remember working out that cool little riff in the middle of the break right there in the studio as I was listening to it for the first or second time ....there was kind of a lull there in that spot that was just aching for some little doodad...now I find that I use that lick in other songs and transpose it into other keys but it works best in the key of C.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/coffee.gif

Hey All,

I'd like to see db arrested tried and convicted of possesion with intent to distribute. I occasionally check out the mp3s but find many of them somewhat wanting. The mando part is there in most of them and generally technically really good (better than me - by far) but the songs somehow often aren't complete. Weekend Lover is all there. Great song great composition great vocals great mando break - it's complete. I played it 5 times before posting here. I realize that this is the mandolin cafe and that we are somehow supposed to "block out" the rest of the music and just focus on the mando - but I admit that I can't - at least not the first few times. I listen to the whole song and then start looking at how "parts" fit together and later look at individual instrument roles. I do this for both mandolin and harmonica. Maybe I'm defective - in fact I've no doubt that if you ask enuff people you'll find some that say so. Anyway great job and if there is a 12 step program available - I'm with ya Dennis.

Take Care! -Ed-

Scotti-that is a fine break in that song. I really liked how you took it up into the higher notes there, and it sounded like some crosspicking or arpegiating to my poor ear. That was very nice.

Line Fork is no slouch either. Great work, Scotti!

Feb-19-2004, 6:09pm
Scotti...it drew me in. It was tasteful without being over done. You didn't try to stick every lick that you knew into that one space. You slid to the back of the beat just before delivering that little "blue morsel" that left me wanting more. Very musical.

..thanks guys....I contacted the engineer of the session and asked him to send me some more MP3s....I should have them when I get home with any luck. Line Fork is a great tune...I probably shouldnt say this but that was the first take...the engineer said "thats it"....no need to do it again....Weekend lover was 3 or 4 takes before I actually had something I could work with.... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

..I will do that...you guys are making me want to come out of my self imposed hiatus with your kind words...you all are too kind..Im just now gettin back into playing after being out of it for 5 or 6 years...its like learning all over again...but with a more mature approach...all the time revaluating my choice of notes and feel of my style...

Hey Folks, I used to be able to click on the mp3's and listen to them after they loaded. Now when I try it nothing happens. If I want to hear them I have to right click and save it somewhere like desktop etc. Anybody know why? maybe?

I'm only semi-computer literate so explain it like I'm 4 yrs old please. Thanks

BTW,hate to be redundant Scotti, but that is some sweet bust-out pickin' on both tunes.
