Well, gosh. I have enjoyed Nile's inquisition into the various song topics... Actually, we've seen a lot of them from time to time: Sailor Songs, Break-up Songs, Holiday Songs, Worst Songs, Blues Songs, Truck-drivin' Songs, and so forth...

Now... It would be my guess that 90 percent of songs are about love... So... I'll be the brave sole to bring it up...

What is the ultimate "Love Song"?

(just curious...)

Folks! (I hope you respond because I'm real shy about starting a topic, cuzz I think that no one will respond...)

Thanks.

I've heard it said that the ultimate love song is "Whisky Before Breakfast"

This is one of those questions that gals use to re-affirm that guys are insensitive clods, like "Do you know what day it is?" The answer "Tuesday" or "The 23rd of November" is incorrect. As you vainly rack your brain for some obscure romantic significance attached to the day, you have already lost the game. When you give the wrong answer, or have no answer, one of which is inevitable, you are re-affirmed as an insensitive clod, which was the purpose of the game to begin with. You can't win.

When a gal says, "What is your favorite love song," a guy hears, "Wanna play a game that you can't win, but will give us gals a chance to have a good laugh at your expense?" What a deal!

BTW, my favorite love song is "Louie, Louie." http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I'll answer a slightly different question. #My favorite love song that I can actually play on the mandolin is "Always".

Hah! Dat burrnitt! Can't pull the wool over your eyes!

Whoa! The information I'm aquiring here is quite significant!

Does anyone disagree that the majority of songs are love songs? Humph.

I would never "have a laugh" at your expense. Quite frankly, I don't see it as "a game."

And "Louie, Louie" is a favorite love song of mine too...

Now I'm mad. I'm sorry that I brought up the subject. It was not intended to... "trap" anyone. It was a legitimate question... So there.

Oops. I just deleted my post (about the Dave Clark Five) because I was intimidated. Great song though, eh? You know it?

"It's right...that I should care about you...
Try to make you happy...when you're blue...
It's right, it's right, to feel the way I do...
Because, because.... I love you."

Man, I love that song.

Dave Mathews "Lover Lay Down" if for no other reason than an exchange I overheard between Dave and a fan at a show (a long time ago, when he played small southern towns) regarding the song. Unfortunately, if I were to relate the exchange I'd probably get censored. So, sorry for the teaser, but its still a great song. Second place, "Closer" by Trent Reznor.

duuuude, I couldn't agree with you more!

However, when talking to my girlfriend (see above posts) My personal favorite is "Lay Lady Lay" - Bob Dylan.

If I want things to be really nice I'll put on Jerry doing "How Sweet It Is." Always does the trick.

"A fine little girl
waits for me
up on a hill
for my knee"...?

Anything from the "Full Monty Sound Track"
Why dont we get drunk and screw- Jimmy Buffett
Crush- DMB
Jude- Beatles

Hah! Hahahahahhh! Hardy-har-har! You folks are funny! (Now if I only knew if you were serious or not!)

Oh well... About those lyrics... I'm not sure either. But I think it's:

A fine girl, who dated me
I snatched a sip of her hot tea
I burned my lips, what a bone
I wondered when I'm gonna make it home.

Geez you guys came up with some ###### songs.
How about:
"Reasons" Earth Wind and Fire
"Unchained Melody" Carious Artists
"Crazy Love" Van Morrison
"Habanera" from the Opera Carmen, George Bizet

Sorry you didn't like our choices, most of them were a bit bleak. Personally, if I were to pick a Van Morrison tune, I'd go with Into the Mystic, but opinions vary. Perhaps a more interesting question would be, what makes a great love song. Personally, I made the selections I did because the artists displayed very real emotion. Closer is, IMHO, a great song not due to shock value of the lyrics but because it displays a very real emotion and conveys the sentiment that the artist was feeling when he wrote it. There is something very pure about a song that wide open. Too many songwriters hedge their bets and obfuscate their emotions. Can't say that about Closer.

madog99, Here's a very dark/bleak love song for you: Beck's "Rowboat." BTW, Johnny Cash did a great cover of it on his Unchained album. Check out these lyrics.

rowboat
row me to the shore
she don't
wanna be my friend no more
she dug a hole
in the bottom of my soul
she don't
wanna be my friend no more

pick me up
give me some food to eat
in your truck
goin' no place
I'll be home
talkin' to nobody
you'll be strange
you'll be far away

big fat moon
and my body's out of tune
with the burnin' waves
she's a billion years away
dogfood on the floor
and I've been like this before
she is all
and everything else is small

pick me up
give me some alcohol
in your truck
playin' the radio
I'll be home
with the gasoline
you'll be stoned
you'll be far away

rowboat
row me to the shore
she don't
wanna be my friend no more
she dug a hole
in the bottom of my soul
she is all
and everything else is small

Now back to OdnamNool's original post about ultimate love songs. I must admit that many have served their purpose well, but one that holds a special place for me is "Miracles" off the Red Octopus album by Jefferson Starship:

If only you believe like I believe, baby, like I believe,
We'd get by.
If only you believe(d) in miracles, so would I. (2x)

I might have to move heaven and earth to prove it to you, baby.

So we're making love, you feel the power and I feel the power.
And there's really nothing we can('t) do
(You know we could, you know we could)
If we wanted to...
(You know we could, you know we could)
We could exist on the stars, it was so easy.

(Oh Baby...)
All we got to do is get a little faith in you.

Woh, I've been so many places I've seen some things (yes I have)

I know that love is the answer (yes it is)

Keeps holding this world together (oh yeah)

Ain't nothing better? Ain't nothing better?(Nothing's better!)

And all the answers to our prayers,
Hell: it's the same everywhere. (just the same now)

Nothing ever breaks up the heart...(love's a game now)
...only your tears give you away (Ain't it a shame now).

When you're right where I found you...(oh baby)
...with my arms around you. (oh baby)

Baby, baby.
Love is a magic word if you ever find inner life

But from that very first look in your eyes I see you and I have but one
heart.

Only our bodies were apart... (it's making me crazy)
...that was so easy, so easy.

I had a taste of the real world... (Just a drop of it)
...when I went down on you, girl, oh.

I can hear windmills and rainbows whenever you talkin' to me

(never say never)

I feel like swirling and dancing whenever you walk in with me

You ripple like the river when I touch you (let me touch you)
Then I pluck your body like a string (show you what I mean)
Then I start dancing inside you (oh baby, a love song)

Oh baby in a love song, aw baby...
Oh Yeah, Yeah, All right
Baby we're sure doin' it tonight

Every time you come by let me try (come on by)
Pretty please, with sugar on it, that's how I like it, ugh.

I can't even believe it with you

It's like having every dream I ever wanted...(dream of a lifetime)
...come true.

I picked up your vibes, you know... (I'm having a fine time)
...it opened my mind but I'm still dreaming.

Yeah (sarcastic Grace mini-orgasm)
And you're right where I found you, with my arms around you!(oh baby).

thanks man , flipped on JC's version today , yeah ! Must have overlooked that one ? Love's got to hurt or it ain't love I guess? (love hurts by http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/rock.gif Nazarath or something like that ) But I was thinking about this today and came up with the ULTIMATE dark love song , JJ Cale's "river runs deep " #. He warns about the river "best be ware if you go down there" , his poor baby met her death down there , last verse , turns out he put her in the river .("no cheating woman gonna make a fool out of me ") sorry I don't have the lyrics to post but a chilling love gone wrong #story .

aieeehhhhh ! I saw Celine on the top of the list and closed the page right away ! Not very patrotic of me but ...she sure can sing. sorry to Oldnam , kind of twisted the thread into a perverse vision of love songs. How about a few Bread tunes , "Diary" had a nice twist in it , and if memory serves they (he) had a bit of the dark side going on. And on a happier note , that song by Randy Travis (?) "till the mountains run to the sea " or something like that , heard it at many weddings. Ok now cheer up , lub is good ! #http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

LOL, madog99. Yep, if I had noticed the Celine selections, I probably would have done the same thing. Seriously, go back and browse those alphabetized archives of love song lyrics. You'll definitely find some old forgotten tunes, including the best of Bread.

Actually, I posted this romantic lyric site for OdnamNool. I felt a little bad about hijacking (unintentionally, of course) the thread with some "bummed-out" love songs. Maybe this will add a little sunshine.

A discussion of the ultimate love song that leaves out The Band's "It Makes No Difference" is no discussion to me. Easily one of the all time greats, though it is on the bleak side again...
