Was just practicing pull-off triplets, and a little piece of skin.. about 2mm diameter, pinged into my right eye. Took about 2 mins flushing it at the tap to get it out!

Whoever said Irish music was safe..

To underscore the seriousness of this incident, it was no doubt a little piece of a callous, correct? http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wow.gif

(Perhaps we should play Irish only while wearing safety glasses?)

Yes, a nice little disk.. sheared off neatly by the e-string

I think we have a serious Occupational Safety and Health issue here. I propose a new OSHA regulation for a mandatory accessory, the "Callous Gard" which will clamp to the top side of the instrument and deflect flying callouses. All mandolin playing should cease immediately until this accessory is on the market. Also, the mandolin manufacturer in question should be sued out of business for marketing an unsafe product!

Don't forget the string maker, every luthier who ever touched it, all prior owners and anyone else in the chain of distribution of either the mando or the e-string.

Dan, you failed to read the warning label. Please be careful.

I imagine we should also refrain from running with mandolins?

I wonder if blood on the strings will make them go bad sooner. Probably better wipe it off, just in case.

Only with the points up, Mad Dawg. Feel free to run with your A-style with impunity.

There is actually a warning in the DR mandolin string sets that warns you the strings may spring open when you remove them from the package. Duh!

Sounds like your e-string might be a bit sharp, Dan http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Now that's what I call a real pull-off!

Jeez, Dan... I hope you didn't return the loaner with blood & gore on the fingerboard.

There were some "dna samples" on the fingerboard, but I gave it a nice gentle cleaning before I gave it back, it's only polite http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

I guess you were using the wrong string gauges - those wimpy light gauges do slice you up so easy - stick to the hawsers:p

Well, that's what you get for *practising*.

Mandolin: its only fun until someone loses an eye  <--eye protection

Mebbe you should consider pull-off like whittling: only AWAY from you http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Dan, I believe you were playing the mandoLINE, a kitchen gadget for slicing vegetables. #This is a common mistake. The mandoLINE is tuned GDMT... http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif

I've never had that problem. Probably due to impulsive use of eye shields fearing a huge OSHA fine. Sorry, some dumb medical/mando humor!
