I just saw the Grand Old Opry on valentines day. The mandolin that Ronnie McCoury was playing looked strange to me. It looked like it was a whole lot deeper bodied than any mando I have ever seen. It also had a sound that I think sounded like a cross between a guitar and a banjo.
It didnt look any longer as far as scale length, but it was definately deeper. Any ideas as to what it was he was picking on? Whatever it was he sure picks it smooth. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif

Ronnie has been known to pick a mandola as well as his bouzouki, it was probably his mandola. The scale length is a little longer, but not easy to see.

they played 2 tunes on the opry this past week. he played a mandola on the first tune, then he put it down (you could see it behind him on a riser) and played a mandolin on the second tune.

It could even be a mandocello, but probably not.
