I am looking for a retively inexpensive bowlback to convert to lefty. Could anyone comment on this builder or this auction?

Thanks

Bear in mind that many folks wait until the last minute and it may not stay so cheap.

I am not familiar with that particular one but a MOP fretboard could be a problem. they are a pain to refret. Also why not find something less ornate. You want something to play not look at.

I would check out something like the Washburn in ad # 11174. Iwould bet that that Poppi auction with go for more than $300 and you will prob have to add to it with the luthier bill.

Don't know anything about Poppi, but I'm sceptical about overly ornate mandolins by obscure builders -- they tend to be remnants of the turn-of-the-century tourist trade and no serious musical instruments. I think I've mentioned it in another recent thread: for lefty conversions, I recommend that you get a de Meglio. They are an appealing combination of classy, abundant and cheap (at least in the UK) and they are easier to convert to lefty that any other mandolin I know because the particular way their nut and bridge are constructed mean that you need to make neither a new nut nor a new bridge. There have been six (I think) De Meglios in (apparently) decent conditions on Ebay UK in the last three months or so and they have gone for between 30 and 180 Pounds.

I guess I'm embarassed to say I thought it would also be nice to look at. It would be joining my 2 other mando's and wouldn't be my main instrument. I do, however take your drift and I guess I'll just keep an eye on it.
