View Full Version : Daydreaming with road atlas yesterday

I was daydreaming about a little roadtrip yesterday and started looking at a road atlas. #The inset map of western NC (with Asheville), part of eastern TN (Johnson City, Cumberland Gap, etc.), and western VA looks very enticing. #Especially to a lover (and player) of oldtime country and bluegrass music who has never visited back there.

So, if I flew in somewhere and got a car, where should I drive? #Likely I ought to wait until the festival season. #But what about music venues in towns, historical sites (music history), instrument shops, etc. #Plus scenic byways in general. #Just doing a little homework here...

Oh, and any places that a Yankee turned Arizonan might want to avoid? #Ha!

Thanks in advance for indulging me here,
Z

Hello again, and thanks for the info everyone. #

So, what time of year should I visit (although I am thinking the sooner the better!!)? #What are the local festivals I would want to hit?

Thanks again,
Z

Being originally from Bristol, I could recommend a whole bunch of stops to make in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. Unfortunately, I didn't appreciate the music as much until I came to Ohio almost eight years ago. Now, bluegrass and country music is the ONLY music around!

Never been to Down Home in Johnson City... it's one of my goals to get down there.

The crooked road in southwest Virginia was already mentioned above -- but I would have to highly recommend a trip to The Carter Fold in Hiltons, VA on a warm Saturday night. When my dad and I went last spring, it was $10 for the both of us to get in... and for a whole night of music... unbelievable.

And, of course, you have to make a side trip to the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance's museum in the Bristol Mall. ;-)

Thanks for listening.

mingusb1,

Unfortunately fall has only just recently passed - but I can sure recommend the Appalachian Fall Festival (early Oct. ) in Norris, TN. A great time of year for doing anything, even sitting, outdoors in that neck of the country.
