I have been attempting to play some mandolin on two Richard Thompson songs, "Keep Your Distance" off the _Rumor and Sigh_ Album, and "One Door Opens" off the _Old Kit Bag_ album; however, I am struggling to situate myself with the keys of the songs, as I am not terribly skilled at finding the key by listening and playing along. Can anyone help?

Keep Your Distance is in E on the album, I believe, but I don't know about One Door Opens.

I tried "Keep Your Distance" in E, but it sounds a lot better to me in G on the mandolin. Just my opinion...

The slowjam group I pick with tried out "1952 Vincent Black Lightening" this week.
A few of the players had heard Del McCoury's version and wanted to play it. I didn't know Del covered it, and was wondering how it would sound. 'Twas good! I'll have to look at "Keep Your Distance" and "One Door". Guess I'll also have to dig up my copy of "Shoot Out The Lights" this weekend!

I just picked up the new dvd "Richard Thompson Live in Providence"! RT doesn't play any mando, but Peter Zorn does. He's got what looks like a Sunrise (don't think it is, tho') in the soundhole and he does that crazy solo on "Shoot Out the Lights"...

Pete Zorn plays quite a bit of mandolin on that DVD, not just the now-infamous thrash solo on Shoot Out The Lights. I've always doubted whether he can actually play the instrument, but from his playing on the more melodic pieces, it seems he can.
The mandolin looks like a Flatiron 1N to me, with a great big pickup bar across the soundhole. Strange choice for someone with a bluegrass background (Zorn used to play in the UK bluegrass band Arizona Smoke Revue).
