I know to restore can be to de-value but here's a tip.
Mix 1 part lemon juice to 1 part turpintine or white spirit to 2 parts olive oil. This will clean and restore without being too agressive on the surfaces, I've done lots of old instruments including my 2 teen Gibson Mando's and the result is not just great, it's incredible and will clean off so as to do it again should you need to.
Being natural products, It's even harmless to the environment as well, try it on an old dried piece of wood and check out the difference it makes.
