Here are a few photos of my latest flat top mandolin project.

Adirondack red spruce top, Honduran rosewood back and sides and red/curly maple neck. Rosewood fingerboard and peghead overlay. Fully bound (front, back, fingerboard and peghead) in cream+black+cream. Overall length 24 1/2", Body width 9 1/2", Body Depth 1 1/2", radius top and back (96") standard mandolin 13 7/8" scale length, adjustable steel truss rod, Grover 309, 18:1 tuning machine (gold plated), ebony nut, Cumberland Acoustics bridge, Gibson style gold plated tailpiece, Crystal Forest M.O.P. inlay on peghead with Ablam logo.

I really pleased with the tone.

Beautiful. That neck looks like a tiger's tail.

Very beautiful. May I ask if you make yours with the wider 1 1/4 neck, like the Big Muddy? I'm looking for a keeper mando, have decided I prefer the traditional flat-tops, and have been looking at the Big Muddys. I like a mellow, sweet tone. Playability is important for me because I have a little arthritis in my left hand. How would you describe the tone? Or are they all different?

Thanks.

Crabgrass,
This one has approx a 1 3/16" nut. I can make any size nut/neck.
I think mellow - sweet tone would describe the sound quite well.
There are some sound clips on my web site of this one.
I have some sound bites of some past oval holes as well.

There is a link to a youtube clip of on this thread of one of my oval holes at link below.

F holes on a flatty isn't my cup o tea, but there's no denying that looks good.

I recorded a quick tune on this mando before sending it off to a musician in Oklahoma.
Any mistakes were inserted at the performers discretion.
