I was ordering strings from Elderly and a salesperson told me that Elderly had suspended shipping of all instruments ( until last of August) during this hot spell to prevent damage to instruments . He said that in the past there has been a reaction between the case and instrument ( in extreme hot weather) which damaged the varnish. Anyone experienced such a problem?

Oh I hope that's not the case.... I just ordered my first ever mandolin from them this weekend. I ordered online so I didn't talk with a salesperson.

I have experienced a type of condensation that can happen in a closed case that gets too hot or direct sunlight( and it doesn't take long in those black tolex cases to generate a lot of heat) which causes this white cloudy thing to happen to the finish. Those UPS and Fed Ex trucks have air conditioning and a great many different types of things are shipped that could be easily be damaged by extreme temperatures. You'd think the liability would make the shipping companies really careful about climate control. But then, maybe not, I just spent some time in a hospital and experienced and witnessed stuff that I would have thought that they would have been better at. . my faith is shattered, buy the insurance!

Yep I had a mandolin damaged when I shipped during a hot spell in LA. Being on the other side of the pond I had no idea how hot it was in LA. Varnish imprinted on the case, bridge stuck to the top. Fortunately it was insured, I claimed and the insurance company paid out in full. Don't ship varnish finished mandolins when it is hot.
