Taj Mahal probably did the definative version of it back in the late 1960's. His version is a pretty good 'Cake Walk' (that's polite). You might want to look him up on one of the vintage recorded music sites and see if it's available.

I really like playing Colored Aristocracy at the local weekly Old-Time jam ... I realized I've only heard the way we play it here, so I started searching for other versions & more info about the tune ... I found 2 on-line recordings ... and some historical/background info

1. 30 sec soundbite of Colored Aristocracy (http://ubl.artistdirect.com/store/artist/album/0,,138253,00.html) from the album The New Lost City Ramblers: The Early Years (1958-62) ... Mike Seeger on mandolin ...

2. Here's the real treasure! ... this is David Grisman playing mando! ... Coloured Aristocracy [3:12] by Great American String Band; recorded live at Keystone; Berkeley, CA; 6/13/1974; available in shn format from Bluegrassbox (http://www.bluegrassbox.com/); here is the setlist (http://www.bluegrassbox.com/txtfiles/gasb1974-06-13.txt) of the whole show; the file to download with your ftp program is found in the folder Bluegrass/gasb1974-06-13.shnf/gasb1974-06-13d1/gasb1974-06-13d1t01.shn

If you're new to Bluegrassbox live performance downloads, I'd suggest you refer to DassPunk's explanations of the less-than-user-friendly instructions found thru bluegrassbox Getting started with Bluegrassbox.com (the mini-how-to) (http://dasspunk.com/index.php?wl_mode=more&wl_eid=128) ... (it took me a long time to figure out what he sets out pretty clearly!) ... Basically, you have to download the file using an ftp program, then use a decoder to convert the lossless compression file to a wav file ... then you can listen to it ... these are very big files, and take quite a few minutes to download (or more depending on your connection)

... and ... this may be more than you wanted to know ... but here is some historical/background info (http://listserv.brown.edu/archives/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0101E&L=fiddle-l&P=R2249&D=0&H=0&O=T&T=1) of this tune, found in the Fiddle-List archives

Keepin' tuned ...

You can download a mp3 file and the tab at Jay Buckeys website.

Jay Buckeys Colored Aristocracy (http://www.jaybuckeymusic.com/mandolin.htm)

But my favorite version is the one I heard cafe member Ash play at Winfield last year.

Wow I love that tune!! I appreciate all the mp3 links because I too have never heard a recorded version of it, just the warped and incredibly cool version played by all my old time frailing b*&jo friends.
