Does anyone have information on this make? The one in question is a flat top, two-piece back, oval hole mandolin. The label offers only the name; it also appears carved into the headstock. The tailpiece is German-made. This mandolin is very well constructed, has a pleasant tone, not unlike some Mid-Mos I've heard. Any help will be appreciated.

Ken: best to post a few pictures. I am not at home but have some Gaglianos in my files. I assume you are not talking about Galiano which was an Oscar Schmidt brand, but had some higher quality instruments with Raphael Ciani's name on the label).

Looks like there is one on eBay right now: Gagliano Mandolin (http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-GAGLIANO-MANDOLIN-MARCELL-GERMANY-TAILPIECE-/400218672648?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d2ee44e08)

Thanks, Jim; the one on Facebook is the one in question. The seller knows very little about the make and it's origin and is seeking help. See you on FB.

Construction looks German (slotted headstock) and this Austrailian advt (http://shop.guitarvillage.com.au/gagliano-folk-guitar.html). for a "folk guitar" ID's Gagliano as a "West German" brand. The other Gagliano mentioned in this thread had a Marcelli-labeled tailpiece, and my German-made pocket mandolin also has a tailpiece with that label. So I'd be inclined to think the mandolin's German-made.

Looks like a fairly standard, inexpensive instrument; quite worn, but no evident structural damage. Starting bid's $50, and I wouldn't go $100 on it.

I showed it to one of my buddies and he told me that it looked like it was a very old and expensive piece because the head stock was ingraved with Gagliano' s name and it's probably worth a couple of thousand.

I seriously doubt that it's worth $2K. Gagliano isn't exactly a household name like Gibson or Martin. The fact that it may be old doesn't necessarily make it more valuable. My guess is it's worth maybe $200-250.

Not sure if this is the same Gagliano (http://www.skinnerinc.com/auctions/2617B/lots/4) who built some nice Italian bowlback mandolins.

Something makes me think that the Ebay seller (tonysdoll) and 'tonys42day' might know one another. The shill 'buddies' were off by a factor of .025. The 'old and expensive piece' sold for $51.

Kind of a lame-A move trying this place to snowball someone on an ebay sale.

Hey Mick....cut him some slack. After all, it was ingraved. Think of the work they had to go through to dig it out. I bet they had to wrestle it out of the cold dead hands!

Maybe I was being a bit harsh, but it just appeared like the seller was trying to drop bait around here. He might have been sincere (four posts about the sale), but it seemed kind of unseemly.

Offer to sell it to him for $500, and run away giggling if you get it...
