I am wondering which Seldom Scene record to buy next. I have only one, the Cellor Door album, and I am looking into the Act II as my next one....any scoop on this disc, is it worth buying? Thanks for your time, dy.

"Old Train" "Scenic Routes" "Live At The Cellar Door"
or any Seldom Scene album.I've never heard a bad one. There is also a John Duffey compilation CD "Always in Style" that's very much worth having.Happy listening:)

I prefer the ones with John Starling - and if you like the "Cellar Door" that might be the sound you are expecting. #That tends to push you to the earlier ones and maybe one later when he returned to the group briefly.

Act II is excellent. Low key, good arrangements "Gardens and Mammaries, oops, Memories" is a fine tune.

AHHH!! - the "classic Scene" (w. John D., Starling, Aldridge..) - now THERE was a group! - I saw them once in a small "venue"(i.e. tavern) - John came out for the 2nd set - walked to the mike and said "...well, is everybody liqoured up?!!". I'll never forget that show - AND..., it was quite a SHOW!! - RIP John Duffey. http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/mandosmiley.gif http://www.mandolincafe.net/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/laugh.gif

Yes he was something, Moose man. I saw them during the Rosenthal era a few times, one time he was hitting the Canadian Club during the day in between sets, motioned me to come over and asked me how long I'd been playing. Didn't really hear my answer.

The band that really turned me on to bluegrass. If I had to choose one and only one CD of theirs it would probably be Act II. I really regret never getting to see the classic line up of Eldridge, Duffy, Gray, Auldridge and Starling live.

Don't forget Act 3. Some great songs on that one, too.

"Like We Used to Be" is a great CD with
John Starling returning for a while.
Great material and arrangements on that one.
Made me cry the first time I heard it.

They were in Toulouse in 1983. I was there too and regret never seeing them with Starling. What a voice.
Given Duffey's hatred of flying, I'd be interested to know if they ever played anywhere else in Europe?

Over the past few years there have been a few shows by the "Seldom Seniors" with Larry Stephenson on mandolin and the rest of the band being the original members. #

On Nov 27, Auldridge, Starling, Gray along with Jimmy Gaudreau and Ricky Simpkins have a show in Charlottesville. That gets you 60% of the original band.

Somewhere, if I could find them, Is a rather large stack of photos of the original Seldom Scene with Starling that I took at an outdoor show back in my shutter-bug days.
All but Mike Aldridge had dark hair. It was the first time I saw and heard them live, and it was one of the best shows I've ever been to.

One other time, later, with Phil Rosenthal in the band, I had seats up front with friends at a small place in Roanoke. There was a couple from Holland sitting near us who had never heard live bluegrass. They heard that there was a bluegress band playing so they came out to hear them to add to their experience of America. The Scene's harmonies that night were as good as I've ever heard them and the speachless, captivated faces of the foreign couple at the endings of the songs only added to the magic of the evening.

Eat your hearts out guys...I was lucky enough to be able to hang with these guys when they first started...There first festival as I recall was in southern Maryland at a small town called Callaway at the "Take It Easy Ranch"...I never knew Duffey drank until one day I saw him sober...Also there is a reunion album made at the Birchmere that has some of the original songs on it and also some different performers doing them....Nice thread fellows and gals....Willie
