This was posted today, and I'm kind of curious... who is the other guy? There are some great closeups of mostly Thile's left hand, but also some shots of him playing some A style, (presumably) his Gibson, and a Cello.

Also, anyone know what this vid is from/for? Here she is:

Can a mod please embed this? I seriously can't figure it out.

Jon Brion is the other guy. Scored the music for the movie Step Brothers.

Is that the same Jon Brion that produced the latest Punch Bros album? The same Jon Brion that produced the latest Of Montreal album?

The A-style is his Smart mandola. I'm not sure about the 'cello though.....

The guy at the end said it best.... "That's crazy"

Wow, was that a TEN STRING mandocello? It looked like it had fanned frets....Nice find!

His right hand never ceases to amaze me. I think I have pretty solid technique, but I can't even come close to that kind of fluidity, never mind the speed. Fun video.

This may belong in another thread, but perhaps I could get away with sticking it in here.

One of my favorite bands is Of Montreal (http://www.ofmontreal.net/) (NB: no mando content). Thile has previously expressed liking (http://www.avclub.com/articles/random-rules-chris-thile-and-noam-pikelny-of-punch,2315/) and the Bros have recently begun to cover them (e.g. the song Gronlandic Edit: original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBfgQvM7wtE&feature=fvwrel)|cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNYqecPVT1A)). Anyway - Jon Brion produced the most recent album of both Of Montreal and The Bros and happened to release a remix of a few of Of Montreal's songs including one called An Eluardian Instance.

The original (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpYQioEnfDQ) has zero mando content, but the Jon Brion Remix (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bggmWDscjCo) is chock full of bona fide chops and licks.

Can anyone confirm the identity of this mystery mandolinist? Is it in fact Thile as this site (http://www.baeblemusic.com/music-news/of-montreal--jon-brion-remix-ep.html) suggests?

If so that'd be just awesome.

TL;DR Did Thile play on the Jon Brion Remix of Of Montreal's Eluardian Instance?

I like the shot of his left hand. I've been struggling with pinky reach on FFcP. It's not just there, I have to rotate my hand around the neck especially on the G string and that interferes with playing smoothly. Watching thile I'm pretty sure I have the neck to deep in the v of my thumb.

I was really curious about that 10 sting mandocello in the video and thought it might be something that Lawrence Smart might have made, since he's been making a couple of 10 string mandos lately so I sent him an email asking about it. He replied and said the 'cello was made by Paul Lestock for Mike Marshall but Mike didn't hold on to it for too long, I guess. What a crazy instrument!

No idea, but there's at least one youtube video of Nickel Creek hanging out backstage where they appear to be chilling to "Satanic Panic in the Attic" or some similar Of Montreal awesomeness. Love Jon Brion too, his CD for "I Heart Huckabees" is a million times better than what made it into the movie.

Incidentally, did Brion's score for this movie ever come out on CD?
