I'm looking for a good music theory book that refers directly to the mandolin. I have heard about "Music Theory For Modern Mandolin by Thomas P. Ohmsen" but it appears to be unavailable at the moment, and maybe too advanced too. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Check out this site for Petimar Press where you can download a music theory book for fiddle and mandolin and pay with PayPal if you like it.

Brad Laird puts out some good instructional material. One book in particular deals with theory and improvisation.

I'm sure there's a lot. Right now, I'm bonding with Jethro Burns, our own pickloser's guide to double stops here (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?50382-Double-Stops-for-newer-players/page2), and Mike Marshall's DVDs a bit.

ukmando,

You need to check out your costs if you buy "Music Theory For Modern Mandolin by Thomas P. Ohmsen" from outside USA. It cost me 2/3rds of the price of the book for carriage to UK.

It weighs nearly 880g and came in a huge box. The supplier says that they cannot ship it by "snail mail" (to keep costs down) so it arrived two days later. (Book - $32.95, freight - $20.36, then add currency charges!)

It’s tough to find good instructional books that have been written well enough for someone teaching themselves and interpreting the information. I have been using 2 beginner books that I really enjoy and feel has helped me a great deal in addition to youtube videos.
Teach Yourself to Play Mandolin by Dan Fox
Greg Horne Beginning Mandolin, Intermediate and Mastering. This series of books each come with a CD and are all written VERY well. You can find more information and peek inside at Amazon.com. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip about postage charges. I had no idea "Music Theory For Modern Mandolin by Thomas P. Ohmsen" was so large.
Have you found the book useful?
