Interesting A-style mandolin on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Antique-1916-WM-L-Powers-Machias-mandolin-w-Case-/260770199499?_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26po%3D LVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8511674451099044482) by William L. Powers of Machias, Maine, dated 1916. Has a Gibson pickguard and pickguard clamp. Headstock is very interesting ... looks a lot like the snakeheads that Gibson would come up with a few years later.

This instrument was in an estate auction earlier today, and either didn't sell or is now being flipped by the buyer.

William L. Powers became principal of Washington Normal School in Machias, which later became the University of Maine at Machias. Can't say for sure whether that's the same chap who built this mandolin, but it seems likely enough. Anyone heard of him before, or seen any of his instruments?

looks like serious overspray to me plus a few other problems. Interesting tho.
