So far I have put 143 TABS and 166 Songs ( lyrics and chords ) on my IPOD 2. My TAB is already in Excel and with margin adjustments and Acrobat Pro, I have very legible music set up in book format that makes it easy to move directly to the song I want to play or simply flip from page to page. I had to scan the song sheets, did an auto removal of all white space in the margins and saved as PDF book format. I have a small portable music stand that will no longer be overburdened with heavy books.
If that isn't enough to justify an IPad 2, you ought to see Real Racing 2 HD running at full speed....VERY COOL!

I love it. I do that plus with StudioMini XL I can record 8 tracks and with MimiCopy I slow down pieces to learn, then there is the Ear Trainer! And now with the iPad 2 you can take a picture of yourself too, to prove that you are working on your mandolin!

I justified it since I do work a lot with youth musically, it doubles as media playback on the television with HDMI cable, it can play music anywhere I need it with a wifi signal while loading our whole music collection with Subsonic (anywhere a cell signal was if I had data plan for the iPhone), I compose/experiment with/learn more about music with it, my wife Skypes like mad with it, she loves some of the games, and I never have ever bought anything for myself that expensive. Ever. My college education is being paid off still so that doesn't count. I take photos with it when I see something wacky I don't want to miss. I work on screenplays on it. I find new uses every other day for it.
If the Android OSes and core libraries had worked out the apps I needed AND the whole latency issue before the iPad I'd be praising Google hardware now instead...someday I will have both.

Excel? As in MS-Excel? How can you do TAB in Excel?

GarageBand for the ipad is pretty cool too!
I could do all that on my lap top. I am not one to sit in cafes and sip a capaccino using their wifi. I do not have people competing for internet at my house so I can sit in front of TV plugged in. Paper is portable, takes no power, holds thousands of bytes per page -good old technology -BOOK. I do not need a $600 viewer.

This (http://itunes.apple.com/en/app/tefview/id492060413?mt=8) just made it a little more worth while...of course one can print to .pdf and read it off a $100.00 eReader too...
In a word: Anki.
Pair up Anki and clips from a slow down program, and you have a learn-by-ear machine.

Tablets have great potential, and I'm looking forward to to the day when I stop hauling my multiple copies of 3" binders filled with lyrics and chords to jams, but for me they are not there yet. The first problem is screen size. a 10" diagonal screen is too small to fit a whole song on and still make it readable at over 2 ft away on a music stand or another surface while performing. another problem is that I feel all of these devices should have a micro SD memory card slot or be able to talk to each other so that I can share a song in my electronic repertoire with the folks that I'm playing with. I had hoped that some one would come out with a large E-ink screened tablet (like the original Kindle only much bigger) because that would serve my needs for music much better, but everyone wants a bright color screen for their games and videos, so that type of device will never reach the market at an affordable price. I'm hoping there are some big advances in OLED screens in the next few years so that we can get larger screens without using more power.
In another word: AngryBirds.

I'll using my iPad 2 as a personal practice amp and effects center for my emando, using iRig: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003T1WCBW/ref=oh_o01_s00_i00_details
(Just received it, but haven't had a chance to set it up and play with it, and it will work on my iPhone for an even more portable setup.)

Tablet costs are coming down and the functionality is going up constantly. I'm waiting for the $200 Ice cream sandwich 10.4" and i'm all in. iPad is kinda neat but i'm not drinking the proprietary Apple Koolaid.

I have a feeling that you're talking to many other late adopters here besides myself, which hardly equates to drinking apple koolaid. Speaking for myself, I only recently made a measured choice to go with apple mobile products due to the incredible breadth of apps, accessories, and interfaces available for them. (to me, the real koolaid drinkers are the guys who camp out in front of the apple store overnight in order to buy a brand new model on its release day :mandosmiley: )

That's it. Then give it to your spouse and let her/him play a level or two-cost is then justified. Only problem is then you may never get to use it again!! :crying:

To justify to spouse? "It's not another mandolin, honey."

I have not done much musically with mine...yet, but I did write a children's book on it that I would never have accomplished on my laptop. I am looking forward to using it for musical applications soon. I do use it for my notes when I do speeches. It works great for everything.
Kip...no cool aide needed. The IPad just works. It is very intuitive. So far I have found nothing better.

If you want it, there's no need to justify getting it.
Kinda like the old saying I remember hearing said that goes:
"Life's short. Eat dessert first."

Ditto to this. I am anything but an Apple koolaid drinker, and I will go as far as to say that I hate mac! That said, I just ordered an Ipad 2 this week. The device is impressive, and the sheer quantity and quality of available apps blew me away. This will be my first Apple product since my Mac Plus I got in 1989.
I am looking forward to a number of uses, and getting all of my mando music on it, along with some music apps is one of them.
