Picked up this Waldzither and did a bit of work & set it up. There's more detailed info & photos you can see here:

Essentially, this instrument had been converted into an octave mandolin previously, and while I was toying with the idea of converting it back, I didn't want to have to scrounge around for a shaft/gear that would match the original tuners as the fella who had it before had simply dispensed with the old shaft and gear after doing the mod.
Bottom line: this is a great sounding instrument, lightweight, plays really easily, and feels great. Our little babe can't get enough!
