G'day all,
Well, it's been a great month for Irish mandolin here in Canberra. A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing Andy Irvine in concert. He only played a couple of songs on the mandolin (he did play Blacksmith though!!); most of the time he was playing a bass bouzouki and a guitar bodied bouzouki. Anyway, in the break I managed to meet him and have a quick chat; a real gentleman.
Then earlier this week my wife and I had a wonderful night seeing the Sharon Shannon band at our favourite live venue Tilley's. Mary Shannon's name doesn't seem to crop up too often in dispatches, but she did some wonderfully tasteful work on the mandolin and banjo that night. She was playing a Godin. And Pauline Scanlon has a lovely voice (not to mention being drop dead gorgeous!). Again, after the show we got to have a quick chat with the band members and grabbed some autographs. A great night.
