Can anyone suggest a good instruction book or DVD for learning to play/improvise out of double stop positions up the neck?
I have been working through the first section of Niles hokkanen's Bluegrass Up the Neck which gives a good feel for the double stop positions up the neck but I don't find it easy or intuitive to make the licks given in the book into solos that sound good. I'm thinking there may be some other instruction material out there that will help me take the next step. I'd even consider some lessons via Skype if there's someone out there who's good at teaching this. Thanks in advance.

Niles book is OK, i have it too. What helped me was listening to David Grisman, he is the king of doublestops. Also a Mike Marshall's DVD is very good for that type of thing.

I found the K position discussed in the Fretboard Roadmap book mentioned above very helpful.

Bill do you have that Violin book? It looks interesting.

I used Bud Oarrs books and John Reishman was impressed what I learned and how I progressed.

In this thread (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?50382-Double-Stops-for-newer-players), our own Pickloser presents a systematic way of organizing double stops into closed patterns that can be moved anywhere up down and across the neck. I downloaded the PDF files, and have found this to be very usefull stuff.

Thanks, Jeff. That thread had some false starts in the document being posted. Here's a better PDF.

So, you 'got your feet wet' with Bud Orr's book (so to speak...) :))

Bud's book has a wealth of info but he always seems to arrange double-stops with the melody note higher than the harmony note. It's good practice but you want to know what they sound like with the harmony note above too, especially for bluegrass.

Sorry, I forgot to address the main point of your post. Mike Compton could teach you this stuff inside and out if his style is to your liking. He uses skype and is an excellent instructor.
