Man, I just looked and was thinking the exact same thing before I saw this thread. I need to stop looking at the classifieds.......

That particular July 9th Loar would rank up there as being the highest "holy grail" of F5s. This small batch of side bound signed Loars is pretty unique and all of them I've played from this batch rate up there in the super category. Even if Monroe had picked another signed date this July 9th batch would still be special.
It's been for sale almost a year now and no takers at the same $250K price.
I don't see it coming off that price either due to it being that good of a Loar. Family most not be that hungry yet to lower price.

The problem is that the classifieds are almost always very good. I can't believe that Heiden has lasted the 7 hours it's been up and that Tucker that Danny posted this afternoon not to mention a few well priced MM's a little further back plus that killer price on that MF5V Deluxe (I used to own that one) not to mention some killer guitars. There's so much good stuff and some real bargains, too bad that the stupid recession had to go a make me all responsible :)) The Cafe classieds are a very dangerous place, beware.

Feb-12-2011, 2:28am
$250k for a Loar in this economy? It might be great and a July 9th but.......Can you say pipe dream? That Heiden is a screamin' good deal. I'm having to seriously control myself and keep from owning two of them! That said, the classifieds here have always been the best mandolin store on the planet. If only I had few extra hundred grand layin' around.......

Thanks for the warning.
With one custom build in the works, and another in the planning stages, I don't need the temptation.
When one's allowance is already allocated, it's probably best to stay out of the candy store!
Maybe, it would be okay for me to just look through the window though?... ;)

I've been staring at a '24 F4 that's been at our local repair shop for a good 6 months ... in great shape and under $10k. Not my dream banjo killer, but after the $250K '23 F5 it seems downright affordable.

Quite pretty: http://www.sprucetreemusic.com/gibf4_680.jpg

All that said ... with a 2 year old, a second child in planning stages I only window shop and am astounded at what I've seen on the market recently.

I don't play lotto, but perhaps should amend that practice.

That thing is pretty, I've been looking for a vintage F4 recently myself, unfortunately my one interaction with spruce tree was so bad that I can't even consider ever buying from them, but Elderly has a few I've had my eye on. Just have to figure out how to explain to the g/f that I squandered away the Europe trip on a piece of musical history. Actually, that doesn't sound that bad at all......

Well, I succumbed to curiosity, and had a peak at the classifieds.
I was quite surprised to see that Jill McAuley had listed her Weber Custom Vintage A Oval at a remarkable price! (NFI)
This is the best sounding oval hole mandolin I've ever heard, period!
If I were looking for a premium oval hole mandolin in the up to $2,500 range I snatch this baby up in a heartbeat!
Check it out (this thing is a tone beast!):

Well, I just re-visited the classifieds and they continue to impress!
Nugget, and Gibson, and Weber, and Collings, and Ellis, and Heiden, and Gilchrist, oh my! (NFI)
Also, speaking of Weber, I noticed that Jill McAuley has changed the classified ad for her Weber Custom Vintage A Oval (http://www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/classifieds.cgi?search_and_display_db_button=on&db_id=46076&query=retrieval) to indicate that she will now consider less cash plus a trade.
This seems like an incredible opportunity to upgrade one's instrument. If I owned a mid-level, oval hole mandolin, and thought I might want to upgrade anytime soon I'd jump on that..Just sayin'...NFI

We know Loar did not work at the bench to carve and glue these mandolins himself. Has anyone been able to run down the names of the luthiers making mandolins in that period before leading up to the July 9, 1924 signings? Do you think all those with the July 9th date would have been the work of a single luthier or a single small team of builders -- thus the consistency in quality? I guess the labels with the Loar July 9th signature were glued in on that very date. I mean pre-dated labels were not glued in on some earlier date before the top was glued on?

How about that February 18, 1924 Loar for $160K -- it sure looks in nice shape?

That Brentrup that went up today didn't last long. I can't buy the Collings back I'm chasing ghosts that don't exist, the perfect mandolin or the one I owned but foolishly let go. BTW, the ONE was MM V70427, I could shoot myself over that sale, I'm a moron. It now lives in Alaska, I tracked down the current owner who let me know that it would not be sold until the time of his passing. He didn't sound too old so I guess I'm stuck on this treadmill until the next ONE materializes. Honestly I didn't know what I had. Here's a teaser of the next applicant;

Yes, the classifieds have been great recently. So great that I just made my first Cafe classifieds purchase, a real beauty of a 1922 Gibson A2, all original (except bridge saddle). Got it for a very good price too, over 1K less than Elderly is asking for an identical one right now. I have never owned a vintage Gibson oval hole before and have been lusting after one for about a year now, saw the ad and the price and jumped on it. Couldn't be happier!

What's the rule of thumb when buying from the classifieds ? How do you determine a fair price of the listed mandolins ?

You'll have factory made and custom made... Gibson/Collings/Kentucky/Eastman, Ellis, etc.

Also you'll have lower cost makers in the under $4k to $1500 range, how do you determine their price ?

Jose

Feb-23-2011, 4:18pm
Basically, to you, something is worth what you will pay for it. Americans get way to caught up in the maze of getting a good deal. If you find THE MANDO for you, the one that fits your hand, fits your style, fits your tone, it is worth more to you than it is to me, all things being equal.

Yes, there are general rules of thumb regarding what inputs went into making the product, name recognition, labor costs, supply and demand, you know, the usual stuff. Also, there are comparable products to look at all over the web, you ust have to search a little. However, buying from this board and it's sponsors is a great show of support and a way of keeping the community going.

Less work goes into carving an A style than an F style, but lots o'folks need that scroll. Me? Well.........both please, with a side of Oval.

Jose,
For the most part the used mandolins are priced very well here, most of the members are well aware of fair value. I typically find out the original price and consider depreciation when looking at small builders, also looking at the big boys like Gruhn, Elderly and Mandolin Brothers that will get you in the ball park on the relatively more popular brands/builders. Another big tell is to keep up with the classifieds to see what stuff is going for and notice trends in popularity and pricing. Perhaps the best part is the all the trading you can do, I'm a trading junkie, I have two in progress right now!

All good points, everyone. I guess it comes down to how we each define good and great deals.

For me, a good deal happens when I have to buy a thing by a given date and I come across a deal that is better than what I would have had to have paid otherwise. Like, my car just broke down, I have to have a car by Monday, it's Sunday, and I just found a car for $1000 that I would have had to have paid, say, $1200 for an equivalent car over at the local used car dealer.

For me, a great deal is when I need another mando like a hole in the head, but I still choose to open my wallet for this Ellis A because the price is just too good to pass up. I would recognize this as a great deal not when I open my wallet, but rather when I start lying to myself about why I couldn't pass this deal up. :)

Tax time? Everyone's broke?

I was thinking perhaps the opposite is happening as well: Many people are getting a nice tax refund and decides to go shopping. That may explain why, at least to me anyway, the items listed for sale either here or by other dealers seem to be moving much faster than they were before Christmas.

Me? I actually got stuck with a bill this year and am wondering if I should just pay it or move to Mexico...

A bit of information some of you may find interesting. The average number of daily replies to all total ads typically runs between 80 and 120. An interesting way to gauge what's moving is to do a keyword search on "Sold" or "Hold." Sometimes those words are used in an ad for other reasons other than the obvious, but it still turns evidence of a lot of items moving between buyer and seller. For the past 30 days we're averaging 32K+ page views per day. Still running over 50% of all replies go to ads not in the 30 most recently placed and its been consistent at the number for many years now.

Yes, if only I could have bought them both!

It is without exception the most amazing instrument of any kind that I've ever played in my life. I'm hesitant to even describe it, as it will seem like I'm just basking in the glow of a new instrument. But this mandolin is so much better than any others that I own or have played. It is evident to even a casual listener (my friends, my mando teacher, etc).

I've even named it....if that tells you how attached I've become in so short a time.

I have aquired a new mando recently that is absolutely blowing my mind, too, so I know how you feel. I get a rush playing it becuase it is just so much fun!

BTW, does your mando know it's in GREENFIELD?

Thanks again dcoventry.

You must be excited about your Rigel. I played a G5 back in the days when Rigel was still rockin'. I really like their "Jethro" model...sounded so good, but more than I could afford at the time (and the G5 was musch more than the Jethro).

I attended the Rigelfest mandolin festival, which was a great time. I got to do a factory tour, meet Scott, Ted, and other cafe members, popped over to Burlington to see Nickel Creek, then the next day I got to see Will Patton, Peter Mix, and some other groups playing live.

Here's a pic of Peter Mix playing one like yours:

Congrats on your G5. I love the block inlay.

Well, it would appear that Trevor is launching a personal attack on my MAS and bank account. A vicious, mean, lovely, OMG, it's beautiful kind of attack. Look waht other instruments he has gathered around him. Oh, the pain of it all!

The Brentrup PML looks amazing. I also love his NFS Eclipse V8.

I'm totally satisfied with my Brentrup.

Trevor's page actually features a photo of my headstock (or one exactly like mine...):

I was telling myself I didn't need another mando. Then I bought an A5G...and still it's like I just have to check the classifieds 3-4 times a day. Soo many nice instruments, so little money left.

Larry,

Next to my G5, I think I could love that mando you have. Damn, that was as good a use of money as I have ever seen. On a purely financial level, for what you paid, you received an amazing instrument imbued with the time and energy of one of the great craftsmen of our era. On a musical level......priceless.

I think that this is the one, along with that Monteleone Baby Grand and a Gilchrist 5, I played back in January. I don't know how long it was at the shop but it is a nice mandolin. For $250,000 I dunno, but still, as they say, go find another.

BTW at least I have a schnauzer already.

The Classifieds are filled right now with lots of great looking Mandolins such as Rigel G-5, '01 Sam Bush, Collings MF5, Gilchrist Octave, Brentrup Eclipse and a Red Diamond A22. And the list goes on. The choices for a guy like me who is looking at moving up the ladder are simply overwhelming. My question is, what are these guys buying to replace these great Mandos?

Well the Red Diamond is just a waypoint in Rick Schmidlin's personal journey. We knew that one would show up soon enough.

As for the others there are probably as many stories as there are mandos. It is interesting how the mid-to-higher grade stuff seems to come in waves. Makes you wonder if people who are thinking of selling one (or two) off see a few good mandolins advertised and figure the time must be right.

As a current, resident Rigel fanatic......OMG!!:disbelief:

Another MINT condition G5 has popped up for another very reasonable price. Jeez, only 17 were made, didn't people play these little gems when they bought them? Or were they purchased for investment? dunno.

Anywho, this one is interesting because of the beautiful and rare satin finish, for one thing, and also for the dot inlays, not the standard blocks. Great looking mando. A beauty.:mandosmiley:

Ok, so I look at the classifieds and see the Tony Rice, Santa Cruz. I have an amazing SCGC pwd and love it btw so i was pretty interested. When i saw saw the price i nearly fell over. No disrespect but 55k? Really? I got a Giacomel from the Dawg complete with paw prints for a very fair price. I realize this guitar has some provenence but the price seems over the top, its not vintage just artist owned. You can buy Ricky Skaggs Ellis for 10k right now. Keep in mind i'm not one to typically question price i just feel that the price on this one is a real stretch.

Yeah, I was a bit stunned by that too.

If Scott were ebay and actually charged for the classifieds, he could be sipping from a bottle of Chateau Margaux off the first page alone.

Instead he's probably responding to PM's like "WHY ARE ALL MY LETTERS UPPERCASE?". Or, possibly, working on that Grisman Photoshop; so funny that its supposed to alter the pants-bladder continuum instantly upon it's viewing. That's what I'm hoping for.
