This mandolin was given to me by my father-inlaw. I am having a lot of fun learning to play - this is my first instrument. All we know about the mandolin is that it is about 70 years old. There are no markings on it anywhere (even inside) to give a clue as to what it is. It sounds great.

That appears to be a Harmony mandolin that was designed by Shutt. Here (http://www.vintageinstruments.com/museum/shutt3fulpage.html) is an original Shutt. Are there any numbers inside it?
Here (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/search.php?query=shutt&exactname=0&starteronly=0&forumchoice%5B%5D=&prefixchoice%5B%5D=&childforums=1&titleonly=1&searchdate=0&beforeafter=after&do=process) are some more threads regarding Shutt with some references to the Harmony Shutts.
Your mandolin and some catalog pages are about three quarters down this (http://www.harpguitars.net/history/shutt/shutt-non-members.htm#instruments) page.

Thanks for the info - There are no numbers inside. It looks like there may have been a label inside at one time, but the glue holding it in place has long ago dried up.
If this is my nephew Neal, and that sure looks like my dads old mandolin, which i passed on down to you, i should have given you the folder i have of its history, next time i see you it will be yours, look after yourself and keep on playing. I forgot to tell you about the bridge, it is only attached by the force of the strings, so just replace the strings one at a time.

Or, he could learn how to properly place a bridge. It's not all that hard.
