677896779067791From the Mandomutt website:

Here's a few details, in Andrew's word's; "....fairly traditional F-5 with ivoroid binding and a sunburst. The top is a very old piece or European Spruce from John Sullivan's stash, (I know his widow, Patty, and bought a lot of John's wood from her after he passed away). The rest is red maple."

I haven't received it yet but will try to post some soundclips when I do. I'm hoping this will be "the one".

He's got some new pics on his website from the latest batch. Some pretty wild, droolworthy stuff on there.

Ditto!

Man, the mandolin/mandola with the complimentary tops/pick guards are too cool...I'd be tempted to hang them as art when not playing!!

I'm not expecting that one for anther few weeks, maybe a month. I'm looking forward to both mandolins but I'm somewhat familiar with Mowry's. The Black was a shot-in-the-dark for me but I have (obviously) a good feeling about it. I like that Mike has decided focus on three or four models only. I like that philosophy. I used to go to a coffee roaster when I lived in Vancouver that had only coffee beans - no other product. They did have an espresso machine and would make you one if you asked but no tables, no coffee accessories, just big bins of beans, a bunch of bags and a scale. The decor was burlap coffee sacks pinned up on the wall. My kind of place!

Those are really cool, Pete! Had you played many Mowrys prior to making that order?

Yeah, I thought the same thing. I played a Sullivan at the Chilliwack BG festival many years ago and was saving for a down payment when I got the news of John's untimely passing. When I found out Andrew had scored some of his wood and was building basically what I was looking for out of it, I took it as a sign :-)

This is how you know you are a refined human being: you look at dozens of pics of seemingly identical mandolins, digest each one lovingly, note and appreciate the unique features and quality of craftsmanship, compliment the builder and the buyer, and go play your mandolin in celebration.
What a damn beautiful instrument the mandolin is. Yes, even without a scroll, should that happen. ;)

Someone pm'd me to ask about this mandolin. I just got it today. There was a bit of a delay because I wanted to do direct transfer of funds, rather than waiting for cheques to clear, which seems to take forever due to the differences in the U.S. and Canadian banking systems.

Then I had to wait another week because I prefer to use the postal service. Using couriers seems to attract all kinds of import, duty and brokerage fees which don't occur with simple mailing. So, I'm at work and it's at home getting comfortable. I'll probably have something to say in a couple of days.

There is a really cool understated quality about it.

P.S. I just realized that my comment may be related to the comment above, it isn't, I just think that there is an understated elegance about the mandolin. :)

[QUOTE=Skip Kelley; Pete,That pair is absolutely perfect! I love the black bound F holes against the red color![/QUOTE]

Thanks Skip.
I can't tell you how happy I am playing these instruments over the past two weeks. They each have their own distinct voice. The mandolin plays easily with perfect intonation and a good amount of pop and piano like highs. The mandola has a powerful C and seems to ring forever. The fit and finish is as I expected and I expected was alot. The bound f holes were something I really wanted on the mandola and despite some initial hesitation, Andrew knocked it out of the park.
My biggest problem is which one to grab first when I sit down to play.

I feel remiss at not posting the shipping manifest. Or maybe a redacted bank statement showing the funds had been deposited. I just received the mandolin and started playing it. I didn't even post the temperature for the day it arrived. I guess I'm not much of a showman.

Yep, there's no doubt of the workmanship. The pics show it pretty well but it is still amazing to look at this thing in person. Andrew is really operating at an incredibly high level. Everywhere you look, it's just perfect. His binding work is really amazing. I've never seen a mandolin (until now) that you couldn't find some kind of binding flaw on.

That said, I'm not particularly swayed by looks. Of course, I like that fact that this mandolin is so attractive but in the end it's all about the sound. So far I've had two rehersals and played one gig with it. I have another gig tomorrow and Friday I'm going to do some recording. Then another rehersal and another gig this weekend. Plus I'm playing it at least a couple of hours every day. So in about a week I'll have something to say but, for now, what Pete said is pretty applicable.

Of course you didn't have to worry about the weather, you're in Victoria for cryin' out loud! Seriously, it sounds like the bonding is progressing nicely, I'm interested to hear how you compare it to the Wood.

I'm breaking out my parka. It may go down below zero here this week. Possibly even snow. And we're only a few weeks away from the annual flower count. How are we going rub the rest of the country's nose in it if this keeps up?

For some reason those pics didn't load on my computer before but they did today. How old is yours? The back is remarkably similar to mine.
