Here are some old german world war one postcards featuring the mando. Cool food for thought.

I wonder since my ancestry from my father's side is German. My last name, Philbeck was originally Feldbach! Then, on my mother's side is the whole Irish and French thing. I guess the love for mando came from that Irish side! They're definitely not playing Big Mon!

I have this image. The sign above them says mandolin orchestra concert 4 women and 8 men. This includes some of those romantic era bowlback lute guitars.

What Tunes did These Guys Play?
This stuff is pretty well documented. #Check out:
Sparks, Paul. 1995. The Classical Mandolin. Clarendon Press, Oxford.

...and, if you can stomach gratuitous noise from old 78s, check out the CDs G.E. 26 (http://www.finefretted.com/html/g26.html) and G.E. 37 (http://www.finefretted.com/html/g37.html) from FFSI (http://www.finefretted.com/).

The hotlink button won't let me run two underlines in succession. Here is the whole list of Golden Era CDs (http://www.finefretted.com/html/golden_era_cds_for_sale.html). The relevant ones are the aforementioned G.E. 26 and 37.

Interesting you glommed onto that notion. Mandolin came much later to Irish music than it did to either France or Germany!

My family name, originally von Braig, originated near Stuttgart. In ancestry, I am a typical North American Euromutt: English, German, Irish, Italian, possibly a bit of Dutch...
