Hi sir mando!
This is the place where we discuss the stuff related to the project. Then, there is a Yahoo group where we upload our music. Craig then moves them to the Mandolin project main page that's at http://www.mandolinproject.150m.com. He's working on a function now so you can upload the files directly to the main page, but it's not quite ready yet. At the moment, the Yahoo group is out of space, but have patience and you'll be able to put it there. The address to that Yahoo group is http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mandolinproject.

To get started, you need to learn "Bill Cheatham"... it's the tune for October. Get an mp3 recording of yourself.

Here's how I made my recording:

I ran a cheap Sony mic I had found into the "mic input" of an old garage-sale 1970's Sansui receiver. That boosted the mic level a bit (and added a ton of noise) and I ran the signal from the receiver's line-out into my computer's line-in.

I recorded a .WAV file using a rather clumsy program called "Quartz Audio Free", then I used Nero Sound Editor (a program that had come with my CD burner) to edit the .WAV file, boosting the level, reducing some of the noise, and converting to MP3.

You will probably want to follow a similar path, at least at first. Use an inexpensive mic (did your computer come with one?) into the line-in on your computer's soundcard, and record with one of the free programs available.

Of course, if you have the $$$ to "do it right", manifold option open up for getting a closer-to-studio-quality recording.

But highest quality recording - or playing - is not required to make a submission!

sirmando,

Here's my suggestion...

Learn any version of "Bill Cheatham".

(Versions of this song can be downloaded from All Tabs (http://www.alltabs.com) and Mandozine (http://www.mandozine.com). (Do you read music/standard notation or do you rely on tab? - it doesn't matter). At these websites, you can download a ".tef" file which contains the sheetmusic, tab, and a midi sound file. Download the free TEFVIEW program, open the .tef file and it should play on your computer.....)

Recording: I downloaded a free program called "Audacity" which works great for me. There are others out there. I have a supercheap mic that came with my computer and I record through that.

Audacity allows you to lay down multiple tracks etc..., but eventually you save your work, convert it to an .mp3 which you upload to the YAHOO mandolin project website that bluegrasstjej pointed out two posts prior to this one.

It isn't as bad as it sounds! It's great, actually.

Just a suggestion. Get a pc microphone. It's much easier, just to plug into your soundcard (or USB).
