I just bought one of these online despite not no knowing a lot about it. It has a carved top and back, f holes, and what looks to be a p90. Anyone ever play one and have some comments on quality or sound. I only see a few on line and most have a much larger pickup installed.

Got a photo?

Most D100s I know about have 2-point bodies and oval soundholes, although I do have a photo of one with F-holes. The original pickup is a soapbar-style thing with a white cover. The modern P-90 was not developed until the mid-'40s, so it's possible that your instrument has had its pickup replaced, or that it's from later than the '30s.

Vega also made A-style electrics -- my favorite is the black one with the horseshoe-style pickup. Photos of the different styles of Vega electrics here (http://www.emando.com/builders_inactive/Vega.htm).

It's Vega day on the Cafe (http://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/showthread.php?66895-Is-there-a-serial-number-dating-list-for-Vega-mandolins-of-1940-s).

And here's a D100 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rt=nc&nma=true&item=200534939092&si=qIIajS2VY0jaqVaxqnb4cOIsFmc%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT) that's taken a couple of recent spins on fleabay.

I have now found a 16 page VEGA original cataloge from 1939 which contains Vega ELECTRIC mandolins banjos and lap steels.....until i receive it i do not know its contents. I have also read that vega electric mandos started in 1936.
