When it comes to tuning, 4 ears are better than 2...

I know, I know, this is not a serious thread;)

I think you could caption that photo

No, no. It's the other string, stupid!

:))You're so right:)) But what do you expect from a man who calls himself shortsighted?:))

Seriously: Do you never tune single strings while hitting all pairs?

I'm new to mandolin and the sound of all those paired strings still dazzles my ears. So if I don't pluck them one at a time I don't know what's going on. I mean, I can tell something is off but not a clue what string it might be.

Another thing...after an hour or so playing the mandolin I pick up my guitar and it sounds deader than a coffin nail. Dazzling, that's the word for the top two courses on a mandolin.

that's why it's good to have a dog or 2..they can tell a string might be off by cocking their head..to the left means down, the right mean's up a little...
great pic stevie..

Good looking Jack Russel. Coloring a bit like mine.

With my luck if I had two dogs, one would cock his head to the left and the other to the right. That's about how my sense of pitch works anyway. I know this, our cat would love for me to just take the E strings off the mandolin and bin them. The other courses are fine but a top-string heavy song makes her groom furiously.

Everybody's a critic...

Please teach me how to get our 85 pound Yellow Lab to help me tune.

Great photo - at least your dog will stay that close to you when you play the mandolin - my corgi mix is fondly referred to as "Mandolin Hating Dog" around here. Here's a photo of her sporting her doggie ear muffs (hearing protection for service dogs) in my attempt to make things a bit more bearable for her when the mandolin comes out!

Cheers,
Jill

Hello,
If you view the first pic full size, it sure looks (imho) like the dog is wistfully staring at the mandolin. Perhaps the thread should be titled "Dog with MAS"? Either that or he/she wants to eat the tuner. Nice pup. Fare well, h
