I saw these photos in Mr. Bailey's strap gallery and unless I'm wrong (which is totally possible) it is some sort of flat-top mandolin. Anyone recognize the type?

I don't believe it's quite what you would call a "pancake" style as the shape is more A-bodied.

Looks like a Mid-Missouri or a Big Muddy flat-top to me.

That looks exactly like my first mandolin... Mid Missouri M-4 that was a good mandolin :crying:

Yes, it looks very much like a Mid Missouri. Some of the terminology for different types of mandolin can be very flexible, and flat tops come in a surprising variety of shapes and sizes. I think "pancake" generally refers to the more rounded flat tops, also called "army and navy" style, but I have heard people apply it to this type as well. You could also call it teardrop shaped. Nice little flat top any way :)

I own a Mid Missouri M-2 with black binding exactly like this one. The company changed it's name to Big Muddy a number of years ago due to some financial hassles. This one looks like it has the same Mahogany sides. One thing about the design is the super small headstock, barely room for the tuning machines with no wood to spare. When I clamp my Electronic tuner on it touches the ends of the metal tuning machine plates.

Excellent instrument, not fancy, great sound.
